It is an honor to work with people as a Therapist. Every person in therapy should be made: 1) to feel understood; 2) to feel appreciated; 3) to be given the benefit of the doubt; 4) to be treated as an equal; 5) to be treated respectfully; 6) to have the freedom to decide. My primary goal as a counselor is to allow you to express your thoughts and feelings so that you can gain a greater understanding of yourself and situation. As a result you will gain insight into what you want to change and how to change it. In addition to exploring feelings and thoughts, I will suggest things that may help.

Sometimes we feel like we are broken into a million pieces. Looking at the pieces feels overwhelming and exhausting. It feels like we cannot do this on our own but we don't want to be a burden on others. Having someone help put the pieces back together can help us feel more whole. Taking a step towards healing is a starting with a helping hand. I am a Licensed Therapist with 5+ years of experience and I am formally trained in EMDR. I like to look at the root cause of our distress and what made us who we are.

I am a therapist focused on helping individuals cultivate the healthiest version of themselves- someone whose internal self is aligned with their external self and equipped with the skills to navigate their lives. Our lives are often filled with competing emotions and circumstances that lack a clear path forward. We may feel stuck in past traumas and unhelpful beliefs that get in the way of our present. I help clients make space for it all and learn to hold it with strength and curiosity.

I believe that effective psychotherapy provides a person with increased understanding and self-awareness. By gaining deeper insight into lifelong maladaptive patterns, a person can gain the ability to have a healthier lifestyle and outlook on life. One may also come to view oneself and others in a completely different way. My style of working with individuals and couples is a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic informed, collaborative approach while being sensitive to each person's specific needs.

Life can be overwhelming at times. With change, decisions, loss, or pain, we can feel confused, scared, depressed, or just stuck. Finding hope and courage in life to face these stressors often times feels lonely and exhausting. What if I told you that you could do talk therapy for years BUT if you don't address your MIND and BODY - not much will change? When we experience trauma, so does our body! In fact, our body is re-living the trauma long after the event is over. Our current physical, mental and emotional state are all clues, to what our body needs to process, to fully heal. Since our body remembers, it's important our body has a chance to process and feel safe again. Safety and comfort are the main principles to heal from all past trauma. Feeling safe again allows your mind and body to fully embrace healing.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
