Eating disorders, body image concerns, and body dissatisfaction have been on the rise for years, with many reporting an increase in these concerns since the pandemic. Recovery can feel daunting and near impossible, but it is an attainable reality. I work with teens and young adults who are navigating recovery from eating disorders and negative body image, healing sexual trauma, processing relationship distress, and facing the unique challenges of adolescence and early adulthood.

You’re not feeling like yourself, maybe you haven’t felt like yourself for a long time. You’re not sure where to turn, you’ve been pushing yourself to keep going, and it’s getting harder to do. Maybe you’ve lost relationships or had a set back in your life plans. What you know is you’re stuck and you don’t know how to move forward. Sometimes you feel like giving up, but right now you’re looking for help. You want to feel hope again, you want to pull your life together, find that next step. You’d also like to work on relationships, and set new goals for your life.

I have significant experience providing therapy to children, adolescents, and adults. I use a strength based perspective believing that each one of us have inherent strengths that can help us manage life. My framework is based on trauma and attachment approaches which emphasize that the stress an individual experiences is usually rooted in a traumatic event that has formed negative beliefs, dysruption of lifestyle, change in family system, or that has helped to develop a less than satisfying parent child relationship. My ideal client is an individual that wants to have a happier life or a family or couple that wants more peace.

I grew up in an Army family, I learned, early on, how to quickly adapt to change, and about resilience. All of my work with children, and their families, has caused me to marvel at their ability to adapt, grow, change, learn and heal. I work one-on-one with children, as well as with their families, utilizing play, and art therapies. I use a Cognitive Behavioral approach, among a variety of other therapy techniques, and always work from a strengths-based perspective. I work with all adults, who are motivated to improve their current situation by making needed changes, resolving issues, and re-imagining their lives.

I operate primarily from a Systems and Cognitive Behavioral perspective and acknowledge trying to balance work, family, and social lives, the individual self, the past and present, and all the events that occur within and between those spheres can lead us to a state of overwhelm and stress overload that we are sometimes not equipped to manage.

Everyone comes to therapy for different reasons, and I feel each client I see is the expert on themselves. I seek to first listen to what brings them in before we plan together how to proceed. Everyone’s path is individual to them. I believe I provide an environment that is safe and compassionate to help you on your journey.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
