I welcome the opportunity to work with individuals looking for help with issues including substance use, depression, bipolar, anxiety, trauma, life transition, and more. I offer individual sessions for children, adolescents, and adults as well as couple and family sessions. I enjoy working with clients from different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.

If you are experiencing an understandable increase in trauma symptoms or substance use during these challenging times, I am here to help. I have specialized training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD, a recommended trauma treatment by the American Psychological Association and the Veterans' Administration. I offer research-informed, online counseling services for students and professionals who wish to reduce or eliminate substance use. So that clients may receive services discretely, I have a direct-pay private practice and do not accept health insurance. 

I believe that psychotherapy is a tool for transforming our effort into meaningful change in our lives. We can do this through seeking insight into understanding ourselves as well as making practical changes in our day-to-day habits. In addition to psychotherapy services, I provide psychological testing and assessment, as well as consultation to healthcare providers and others.

Nobody is exempt from life’s challenges. We all experience major life transitions, overwhelming emotions, or self-limiting beliefs. Luckily, we all have the ability to heal and grow. Counseling simply offers an avenue to take on life’s challenges using your innate resources and strengths while also developing self-awareness and building resiliency. I practice from an integrative approach. I believe that every individual is unique and that the therapeutic interventions should be specifically catered to the needs of the client.

My professional interests include depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, and serious mental illness. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families in therapy. I also focuses on stress management and wellness in my clinical work. My therapeutic influences are primarily Humanistic, Cognitive-Behavioral, Systemic, and Interpersonal theories.

For over ten years, I have been dedicated to working with individuals who struggle with the many challenges that life has to bring. While we all face challenges, sometimes there are hardships or circumstances that leave us feeling like things are out of our control. I have provided mental health services for over 35 years to adolescents and adults in inpatient and outpatient settings including college counseling. I strive to provide a confidential, supportive setting for individuals as they sort out how to best cope with life transitions and challenges from high school through retirement such as work or relationship stress, anxiety, sleep difficulty, depression or bi-polar and coping with grief/loss and trauma. Michael McGee is a Licensed Professional Counselor and maintains a private practice in Radford and Roanoke, Virginia. He has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Hypnotherapy. He has been involved in the care of individuals with chronic mental health issues in Richmond, Roanoke, and the New River Valley of Southwest Virginia. Michael is Clinical director for the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnosis. Mr. McGee authored 3 books for treatment professionals. He has completed specialized hypnosis training for treatment of anxiety, phobias, thought change, weight loss and stop smoking.
