Sometimes we need a caring person, skilled at listening, who will act as a mirror, reflecting back our deepest knowing and personal truth. The act of entrusting another in this manner helps us to realign with our wisest self. We begin feeling more at ease and clearer about our intentions. Choices begin to reflect who we really want to be in the world. Suddenly, we are noticing and appreciating what is right and joyful in life more of the time.

The therapeutic relationship is crucial to the healing process, whether the problem is with external relationships, traumatic experience, or one's relationship with the self. I use psychoanalytic principles and relational dynamics to explore the internal conflicts and patterns that are at the root of emotional, psychological and relational problems. I am also sensitive to spirituality and the existential problems inherent in being human, and how these affect us all. I have a special interest in the psychology of twins and intersubjective relating in general.

I AM NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS. I am a psychotherapist, licensed as a clinical social worker, certified as an alcohol and drug counselor and TRE® provider, drawing on over 25 years of experience. My primary foundational belief is that our mind and body operate as one organism, which contains its own healing potential. I use evidence-based approaches (EMDR, TRE, IFS) to assist clients in the natural healing process that includes moving to a state of regulation in the nervous system and accessing the wisdom that already exists in a person’s brain chemistry and somatic experience.

I believe that each of us has an innate capacity to grow and heal. Sometimes, through difficult experiences and life transitions, we forget that healing and wholeness are always available to us. Therapy is a place where we can compassionately find ourselves again through expression and acceptance of all of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. And as we begin to heal, our perspective of ourselves and others shift in ways that facilitate long-term and lasting changes.

People can live a life that is joyful, peaceful, compassionate, mindful and connected with the love that we all are. As life takes it course, we can lose sight of who we are at our essence. Patterns and habits get established that can interfere with living life to its fullest and in alignment with core values and highest priority intentions. Cognitive decisions get made that form belief systems and ways of acting and behaving in the world that are not always in alignment with our essence. Emotions can get stored in the physical body, which the cognitive mind may not always be able to fully access without support and guidance.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
