I specialize in working with folks with stigmatized behaviors and identities, or who are otherwise mistreated and ignored in traditional mental health settings. My therapeutic approach is, above all else, strengths-based and person-centered. You are the expert in your own experience and what you need. If you're learning to safely unmask your neurodivergent self, exploring your gender identity or sexuality, examining your substance use, or navigating non-traditional relationship structures like ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, BDSM, or queerplatonic dynamics, I'd love to work with you!

I have experience working with people struggling with substance use issues, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationship issues, and more.
My work with individuals begins with establishing an emotionally safe space in which we can explore what brings you into therapy. We then tailor our work to your specific issues and needs, be they contemporary stressors or long standing vestiges of the past -- or both. We may discover core conflicts, psychic remnants of past relationships and experiences, that contribute to your current symptoms or show up in your life as self-defeating patterns in your relationships. Re-working these past struggles can help release you from feeling emotionally trapped, so that you have greater freedom and authorship in your life.

With a focus on trauma/PTSD and substance use disorders, my work as a therapist frequently brings home the reality that people can heal. With effective treatment, clients are freer to make decisions and choices based in the here-and-now rather than the past. Recovery takes compassion toward self and a willingness to focus on the course of healing, and being a witness to this process is an enduring (25+ years) path of my work.

I have 4+ years of experience working at a private, substance use disorder outpatient treatment center.
I work very well with adolescents and adults whom struggle to believe that therapy could be beneficial for them. Through my experience, I learned that utilizing psychodynamic theory with the individual during the first several months of therapy aids in building a strong therapeutic relationship. Thus, my initial goal is to help the individual understand how their experiences in life - both positive and negative - contributed to shaping their behaviors, thought patterns, interests, etc. This will help the individual to identify unconscious stressors and improve their emotional response.

I help adults (18+) manage major life issues/transitions such as depression and anxiety; substance use; medical illness (cancer and HIV); relationships; loss/grief; and job stress.
Hello. Thanks for reading about me. I’m a warm, down to earth psychologist with a passion for helping people. Staying present focused, we will center on keeping your hopes and dreams up front, while reducing distress in the context of a solid and genuine therapeutic relationship. We will work to enhance your understanding of the barriers that are keeping you from achieving your goals and learn skills to turn that understanding into strategies to better overcome them. While there is no quick fix to most problems, I use proven strategies (such as CBT and DBT) that will help you experience relief and progress relatively soon.

I am trained in the treatment of anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, and compulsive or problematic substance use.
Do you feel like you are in a constant battling with your own mind or body? You may be struggling with intrusive anxiety, traumatic memories, or chronic illness. And your methods of coping are not serving you - you feel so locked in avoidance, suppression, or distraction that you can’t recognize yourself or what you stand for. Your life feels centered on avoiding pain instead of your most important values.

I think dynamically, but work eclectically. I coach behavioral changes while exploring beliefs, reactions and motivations so you understand yourself better and enhance your options in living. I deeply believe that the more we understand ourselves and our motivations, the greater will be our power to take control of things that previously seemed inevitable.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
