For 19 years I have supported folks with mental health conditions and substance use disorders.
Have you made significant changes in your life but find yourself stuck in old patterns? Are you in recovery from drugs or alcohol or disordered eating, but still find yourself struggling in other ways? My Name is Kelle Kirk and I help folks in recovery STAY in recovery. Many of us have found out that cutting out the drinking or drugging or changing our relationship to food or our bodies didn't "fix" everything; in some ways, maybe we found things to be more intense or complicated in this new landscape. You have come so far and made such progress, let's work on the being human and truly do something different.

I am committed to creating a genuine and supportive environment to explore your goals, feelings, and stuck points by integrating a variety of evidence-based modalities. Together we will alleviate stress and interpersonal strain, build balance, and promote long-term wellness. I believe that what we are dealing with is not who we are. Challenges with substance use, mental health symptoms, relationships, or whatever else you are facing do not define you. Learning how to see beyond these things to the full and complete person you are can be both difficult and healing. I believe that my role as a therapist is to help clients start that process in a supportive and non-judgmental way. I want you to feel that you are the driving force in your therapy experience, not judgement or stigmas.

My specialty areas include alcohol and other substance use, abuse, and other addictions or compulsivity.
Choosing a therapist that is a good fit for your specific needs, values, and methods for change can be challenging. There needs to be a comfort level and fit that will foster a positive and effective working relationship. The therapist's education, experience, competency, and certification, are essential to promoting positive outcomes. I have been working with women, men, couples, and families for 20+ years and have learned so much from clients regarding their concerns, hopes, dreams, and methods of change. My approach is Collaborative, Strengths-Based, and Solution-Focused.

My work has been primarily centered around concerns relating to complex trauma, substance use, anxiety, ADHD, and identity concerns. In particular, I have a strong passion for working within the LGBTQIA+ community. As part of my practice, I recognize that our overall health can be impacted by our lived experiences with the broken systems around us, and at times, symptoms can be a direct result from living within these systems. My focus is to help clients gain insight around the impacts that past experiences may have had, address past trauma, recognize one's own strengths, and learn how to navigate through the challenges of life.

As men, therapy is often perceived as weak, emasculating, soft, or unnecessary. We often feel pressure from family and employers that continues to mount and build over time. We notice our behaviors changing while the latent emotions, pressure, and stress begin to build. Shame, fear, and anger build and become unmanageable. Substance use or compulsive behaviors begin to surface without us recognizing it and evolve in to a inescapable cycle.

Hello! My practice is focused on providing mental health care to people with co-occurring substance use issues. Everybody is a little different - some people are working on traditional, abstinence-based recovery, while others are hoping moderation may be an option once underlying mental health issues are addressed. Many are simply uncomfortable with traditional, group-based treatment. I embrace a values-neutral approach, and always try to keep your goals at the forefront.

I specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders, trauma, depression and anxiety.
As a therapist, I believe that authenticity and the therapeutic relationship are invaluable. I believe that therapy will not work if there is not a strong therapeutic alliance. I tend to be a laid back, compassionate clinician who values humor in session, but I am also not afraid to challenge you and be direct. I believe each individual is unique, therefore I do not believe there is one set way to do therapy. I value meeting individuals where they are at and learning about their strengths to help them in session. I work with adults ages 18+.

Are you considering making a change to your substance use or problem behavior? I specialize in working with clients who either don't want to pursue the typical rehab approach or who have tried it and want something different. Many clients come to me because they're looking for an alternative to typical treatment. I provide guidance to clients as they change their lives while still being able to manage responsibilities at home and work. Most of my clients are working professionals who are looking to make lasting change. I frequently work with couples & families as they navigate problems related to disconnection or problem behavior.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
