JumpStart 2 Recovery specializes in treatment of mental health and Substance Use Disorder.
It’s the struggle between not being understood and not being able to communicate your needs. There’s a solution, but its only temporary and causes just as many problems as it solves. Wallowing in shame, doubt and embarrassment is starting to weigh too heavy. Conflicting racing thoughts and emotions make the situation that much worse.

I specialize in Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Trauma related therapy.
Every client comes from a different background, with different experiences, needs, thoughts, and expectations. With this in mind, my goal is to listen, discuss, and try to understand my clients, where they are coming from, who they are, and why they need me. Together with my clients, we work to identify goals that the client feels are significant and important, and then develop plans on how to achieve these goals in reasonable, managable, and most importantly, healthy steps.

My experience over the past eighteen years as a therapist includes addressing trauma/PTSD, substance use/abuse and recovery, anxiety, depression, transgender and gender dysphoria, and LGBTQ+ issues for adolescents and adults as an ally.
Seeking a therapist can be a challenge to find the right fit, but when you find it you can work on your behaviors, explore struggles with difficult moods and emotions, and process stress in a non-judgmental environment.

Have you experienced anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance use concerns? Do you recognize struggles with self worth, or feeling like you can't stay grounded or present in your everyday life? These can be very difficult problems to navigate, and therapy can help. I believe healing takes place through our relationships with others, and I provide a judgement free safe space to help this happen. I love to work with adolescents (16+) and adults on their own healing journey and guide you in finding your own strength in the process.

Harm reduction provides a way to look at substance use that allows for reflection before action, and relapse as part of recovery.
Hi there! I specialize in working with folks who are newly experiencing behaviors and emotions that are difficult to understand. Together, we can explore what those thoughts and feelings are, how best to understand them, learn about treatment approaches, and set goals. I enjoy helping build a support network that has your best interest at heart, and allows you to share your experience with those supports in a way that gives you choice and dignity. LGBTQAI+ affirming and compassionate care is the standard here, as is support around accessing reproductive healthcare.

Building resiliency isn't always about overcoming the mountain sized obstacles. Sometimes, its about overcoming the desire to stay in bed all day, or have popcorn for dinner the fifth day in a row, or have just one more drink at the end of the day. Trauma, and its positive counter-part- Healing, is within each of us. Cultivating a positive support system and partnership is all about accessing the natural power you hold within yourself. Within each individual, and couple, embracing healing is possible. I believe in empowering people to build a relationship with themselves in such a way that they develop internal trust and reliance.

My ideal client is someone who knows there's something they want to work on, but isn't sure how to start. Are you struggling with anxiety and depression, and don't know why? Are relationships difficult, or do you feel like you haven't found your people? Has life suddenly just switched to "hard mode"? I especially enjoy working with people who are trying to work while taking care of chronic illnesses, fellow social services employees, and LGBTQ+ clients. I love working with neurodivergence!

If you've ever found yourself in a situation where you needed support but didn't know where to turn, you're not alone. I recall my initial attempts at seeking therapy in my younger days, where encounters with judgmental counselors deterred me from seeking help for a while. As life unfolded, it became evident that something wasn't right, prompting me to persistently search for a compassionate guide who would listen without judgment and aid me in my healing journey.

Are you searching for a place to belong, to be heard and find healing? Mariposa Counseling was founded in 2022 by Alaina Smith. Mariposa is the Spanish word for butterfly, and it was chosen to symbolize the transformation that butterflies represent. Humans go through our own transformative journeys, and while not as obvious as a caterpillar to butterfly, it has potential to be just as impressive and wondrous. We believe every individual is worthy of dignity and respect and treat them as such.

You found yourself using substances to cope with intense feelings of depression, anxiety, and past trauma. You find that you no longer are doing the things you enjoy and don’t even recognize yourself anymore when you look in the mirror. You feel hopeless and trapped in this cycle of avoiding these feelings. You wonder if things will ever change. Therapy can help provide some hope. I believe change and healing happens through support, self discovery, and new habits.

I am depth oriented, person centered, and art-based therapist. I deeply trust my clients, their wisdoms, and the potentiality of our relationships. In this work, we use and engage the symptoms and experiences of anxiety, depression, insecurity, etc. to move deeper into what often lies beneath these experiences: the enigma of living. Using compassion, acceptance, kindness, courage, and creativity this enigma becomes a dynamic partner in creating the life we want and need to live.

You look back and realize your life has not turned out how you had hoped. You feel like you have no idea who you are anymore and are unsure when that even happened. You feel like your trauma has stolen your life from you. You are burdened with trauma and are tired of everyone telling you how strong you are. You want real change. Depression, anxiety, stress, family are all impacting you and you wish it would change.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
