Welcome! I'm Joanna. I work with adolescents (16+) & adults, most frequently young adults. I particularly enjoy working with transitional issues - changes in school, jobs, family, relationships, identity, etc. Often, my clients are dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, trauma, and/or interpersonal conflict. I value working with folks with a range of backgrounds, races, faiths, genders, sexualities, and lifestyles. My work sees people through a systems lens, recognizes the oppressive barriers to mental wellness, and encourages reflection on cultural impact. My ideal client is open minded, patient, and motivated for change.

There can be times when it seems our bodies, or minds, or even or world are betraying us. The human experience itself can be difficult. Introduce chronic fear, depression, intrusive thoughts, or anxiety and it can be difficult to see ways to change, making things even more overwhelming. We will work together to see how you can find your footing and create a more beneficial perspective and hopefully impact your future. I am most versed in treatment of depression, anxiety, OCD/related, trauma, substance use (alcohol, marijuana, other behavioral i.e., food, sex, etc.), couples, and men’s issues; LGBTQ+ ally. I work with individuals and couples who are all suffering in their own way. I believe that compassion and acceptance are necessary components of effective therapy. We all have the potential for positive change, but there are times when we have lost our perspective and feel overwhelmed. I offer an environment where you can be heard and affirmed. I believe we can find the answers by working together.

Just as music, art, food, seasons and politics resonate with people on uniquely personal levels, so too does therapy. As a Humanist, I integrate multiple treatment modalities to address metal health challenges including fear, sadness, anger, frustration, trauma, guilt, shame or feeling "stuck." The core of my practice encourages continuous translation of therapeutic insights into personal growth opportunities. Integrated interventions may be insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, mindful and/or supportive to help us understand who you are, where you come from, who you want to be and what gets in the way.

Are you desperately trying to reconnect with your partner after experiencing infidelity in your relationship? Maybe you have underlying childhood trauma that has impacted your close relationships, especially how you relate to your partner? Or maybe your life has been fractured by addiction and you're struggling to find emotional equilibrium. Even though you’re committed to saving your relationship or, perhaps, have quit using substances, you may still feel like you haven’t addressed the core issues that keep you stuck. If only you knew how to truly connect with yourself, you could move your life in a more positive direction.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
