Do you feel like your anxiety is running (or ruining) your life? Are you considering therapy but not sure where to start? Are you concerned that you might have an unhealthy relationship with drugs or alcohol? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then we might be a good fit for therapy! I primarily work with adults struggling with substance use issues, anxiety, burnout, and general life transitions.

I have extensive experience in treating substance use issues using a harm reduction/decision making approach.
At the core of my practice is a humanistic value that honors the individual person and the whole of their life experience within the larger global system. I focus on helping people build awareness of their needs and how to be able to effectively weigh decisions for action. I work with all genders in the age spectrum of adolescence to adulthood. To compliment the diversity of the experiences that define life, I use a variety of psychological modalities. My approach to therapy draws heavily from training in systems theory, existential therapy, relational therapy, ecotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

I have experience working in child welfare, marginalized communities, substance use, and for the last 10 years I have practiced as an individual and family therapist.
I strive to create a peaceful accepting space for you to process whatever heaviness you have been carrying around. Therapy should be a place where you feel grounded even in the midst of chaos and struggle. Everyone deserves to be seen and fully accepted for who they are in this world, I hope that I can provide that for my clients. Making the decision to seek therapy often doesn’t come from just one thing, it’s a combination of our past, present, and possibly future. We will explore all parts of you to understand who you truly are and help you become your most authentic self.

Wondering whether alcohol/substance use is gaining control of you or a loved one's life? Do you worry about a teenage son or daughter using drugs/alcohol or demonstrating oppositional and hard to handle behaviors? Early intervention for these challenges often leads to greater chance of success.
Thank you for looking at my ad and considering the process of psychotherapy/counseling for your life. Many of my new clients have spoken about the anxiety they experienced when they decided to seek additional support through a therapist. I have come to recognize that this anxiety mostly comes from each client really hoping they can find the right match for themselves. Hopefully this brief biography will facilitate your decision about whether we could match up nicely. Please review my website which will provide you with a greater understanding of my experiences.

Work Life specializes in individual, family and group therapy addressing issues related to substance use and mental disorders.
Letter from the Owner, LaToya Nkongolo: I started my career 24 years ago as a counselor in a juvenile detention facility. At that time, I learned the pervasiveness of mental health and substance use disorders, and the dangers of self-medicating. It comes a time where self-medication begins to hurt the addict and everyone around him/her. We work to help individuals and families break the cycle of addiction and/or manage mental health symptoms by learning ways to cope with life stressors. Our compassionate, highly competent staff are here to help you achieve peace of mind!

We specialize in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, poverty, effects of incarceration, anger management and substance use disorder.
Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological and social well-being. It is important at every stage of life, as it can make daily routines and tasks challenging. Often, individuals are unaware of how their experiences are connected to their mental health, or unable to focus on those connections. Untreated mental health can increase unhealthy coping skills, dysfunctional relationships, low self-esteem, and unreached goals. Many individuals want stability, understanding and happiness. Having a supportive, therapeutic relationship can cultivate both personal and mental health goals.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
