My empathetic approach meets the individual where they are, to explore their concerns without shame, guilt, or judgment. Everyone faces challenges and difficult times in their life. The way we receive information from the people, places, and things in our environment is rooted in experience, belief systems, and our personality. We respond and interact with others based on our defined relationship with ourselves and our experiences. My goal is to create a safe environment, to cultivate an authentic relationship with yourself. We will work together to develop attainable treatment goals based on your needs and wants.

Our staff are licensed in Illinois and have specialized training in areas of trauma, anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and mood disorders. Some other areas of expertise include crisis intervention, family and couples counseling, and group counseling. In addition, we have created and facilitated several groups and utilize a cognitive-behavioral and trauma-informed approach in working with clients. We also view our clients holistically, which considers all aspects of a person's life. Rather than treating just the symptoms, this approach looks deeper and tries to uncover underlying causes.

My aim is to be genuine, down-to-earth, and to use a healthy dose of humor in therapy. I specialize in depression, anxiety, trauma, and chronic suicidal thoughts, though I work with a wide variety of clients. I love providing support to the parents of teens with behavioral and mental health challenges. I am trained in prenatal/postpartum mental health. Over the past ten years, I have worked closely with many transgender individuals and their families. An athlete's life is different from other people. Does the stress of being an athlete sometimes makes you feel overwhelmed and alone? Are you expected to be almost perfect and fear you won't measure up and will get ridiculed? Are you afraid of not being "good enough" and coaches losing confidence in you? Does worrying about your performance leave you feeling overanxious? Do you have moments of overwhelming sadness but are afraid to let anyone know because you're an athlete and athletes can't show any signs of weakness, all the while feeling stressed out with no one to go to?

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
