The purpose of therapy is to take what you have learned and apply it outside. It is not always easy to make changes, and change can be scary, but once you put your words into action, the change can be beautiful. I have worked with people who struggle with substance use issues, depression, anxiety, and families. I have a passion for working with people in the BiPOC community. I want my clients to believe in themselves and what they can accomplish without needing external validation. My goal is for you to feel confident in your decision-making to process your needs/issues without relying on others.

I'd like to think that I'm able to best serve those struggling with self-worth, trauma, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, anger, and substance use.
If you've made it this far, you've already taken a huge step in starting the therapeutic process. I imagine you're going through endless amounts of identical looking pages and google searches in order to find a therapist you feel will be a good fit. It's an incredibly daunting task to search through all the pages and hope you find a therapist that you believe will be non-judgmental and trustworthy. How do you trust that out of all the countless web pages, you can find a therapist who is honest, non-judgmental, and safe for either yourself or someone you care deeply about. Maybe it can be helpful if I share about my background.

I have specialized training in substance use disorders at the Addiction Institute of New York and have worked extensively both with adolescents and adults.
I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience treating a wide range of disorders. My psychodynamic background naturally lends itself to the exploration of unconscious conflicts and the profound impact of early experiences. However, I appreciate that the decision to seek treatment is often prompted by distress and I understand the importance of maintaining focus on the presenting problem. Understanding the past as it creates the present is hallmark ultimately to achieving a better quality of life.

Maybe you can identify with some of the things I have been through which played a part in my decision to become a Clinical Therapist. Middle class & Brooklyn born, I had experienced many adverse situations in my life, which began growing up in a dysfunctional home. A dysfunctional home life is much like an Alcoholic home life, however, without the alcohol. If you experienced dysfunction growing up, it is the main ingredient that qualifies the entire family to seek therapy at some point in their life. When dysfunction causes the brain to rewire, we now have Mental Illness at play.

Are you struggling with addiction, maintaining complete sobriety or simply finding that proper balance between addiction, abuse, and healthy recreational use? Are traditional approaches not working for you? I am a licensed mental health counselor, specializing in addiction and trauma. Using modern research and interventions, I believe there is no such thing as a 'one size fits all' approach when it comes to addictions, unhealthy or unwanted habits. As an existential, humanistic counselor, I take a psychodynamic approach to treating individuals' personal needs, while simultaneously treating substance use and process addictions.

I have extensive training and experience in the treatment of trauma-related conditions and dissociation, mood disorders, eating disorders, and substance use.
As a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist, I have expertise in the treatment of survivors of adversity and unforeseen life events. For some of us, life is often unpredictable and certain experiences may throw us off balance. Yet for others, life seems to have been difficult and unmanageable since the beginning and getting on track has been unmet despite the desperation and effort. If you have accepted the need to "make a change", you may consider reaching out to me as an objective and nonjudgemental professional who can support and guide you towards building a life that you experience as "worth living"; whatever that may look like.

Doro has specialized training in working with adult survivors of trauma and concerns associated with trauma survival (including substance use, low self-esteem, and interpersonal difficulties).
Dr. Christina Tsonas Doro has over a decade of experience as a licensed psychologist working with individuals across the adult lifespan who are experiencing anxiety and depression. Utilizing a client-centered approach, she views therapy as a collaborative and individualized process in order to understand each individual’s unique life circumstances and goals for change. Given that people often seek therapy due to feeling stuck in patterns that move them away from the life that they want, she works with patients to increase awareness of these patterns and apply new coping skills to navigate the present day and build a valued life.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
