My treatment focus is helping people find themselves within themselves, and helping people establish and maintain who they are and who they want to be within intimate relationships. Relationships sometimes feel too distant and, unfortunately, these relationships can often leave people feeling emotionally abandoned or isolated. Or, relationships can feel too merged, leaving people feeling overwhelmed or smothered by another's needs or demands. My strength lies in helping people find a place where they can be in intimate relationships and not emotionally lose themselves or overwhelm loved ones. Psychotherapist/Couple Counseling.

I have been working in my field of clinical psychotherapy for well over a decade, and I am licensed in 3 states (Arizona, Nevada & Texas). I am passionate about addressing clients' dysfunctional relationships with themselves, others or even a substance, and TRULY understand the impact those dysfunctions have on the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks, maintain a job, maintain proper self-care and the erosion of peace and stability that becomes seemingly unattainable. I roll up my sleeves with you, unravel the chaos, help to clear your filter, tweak and reframe your reference points and perspectives, and set you on a path of hope!

I embrace a holistic approach to my life and with my practice and patients. Holistic Therapy is a process based on looking at ALL the parts of you, from that inner child hiding away to the parent, spouse, sibling, employee person you may be in the world. Traditional talk therapy is important, and I am educated and trained in the modalities and interventions it has to offer. My emphasis in those areas would be Family Systems and Attachment Theory, with a Jungian slant – so eclectic.

My hope is to create a safe, supportive environment in which you can explore your emotions and examine barriers that are preventing you from living the life that you want to live. I work using a style of fostering trust and authenticity. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is at the core of beginning the process of change. Together we can discover what you value and how to live a life that honors those values on a daily basis.

After 30+ years practicing psychotherapy and marriage counseling, I still find relationships issues to be a major reason why people come to therapy. Relationships can sometimes be too emotionally merged, or too emotionally distant and isolating (however, there are times when relationships feel both merged and isolating all at the same time). My focus is on helping people realize and alter emotional issues that pop up over and over again and consistently inhibit relationships. Sometimes we know we're stuck or lost in a relationship, but we just can't figure out...any way 'out' of what we feel.

We live in "interesting times," and my clients are looking for help as they navigate the ups-and-downs and unpredictability of life. Relationships, career paths, sexuality, family issues, work issues, change on all fronts, trauma and loss are some of the things that clients bring to talk about in their work with me. Some clients come with specific goals, and others come just to talk and figure things out.

I have a passion and expertise in creating safety and security with relationships. This may be you as a couple, you as an individual, or multiple family members seeking guidance and support during difficult times. As a mother and a wife, I understand how challenging life can get when working to establish a sense of love for all parties within the family. Often this is a balancing act, with multiple spinning plates, and with only so many arms to keep this act functional.

I am passionate about a lot of things, foremost of which is helping individuals struggling with sex addiction, maladaptive sexual behaviors, intimacy disorders, and problematic gambling. I am also EMDR trained and utilize this technique for trauma healing. I focus on recovery from trauma, whether related to addiction or family-of-origin issues. I believe trauma affects everyone in different ways and requires its own unique recovery process consisting of blending addictions and trauma models together. Every individual has the capacity to heal and move forward on their journey towards health and happiness.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
