I enjoy working with people who want to grow, and who realize they need to change old ways and patterns that no longer serve them, but instead bring pain. In my practice, I've worked with people in all kinds of pain, and with all kinds of problems. I've helped people struggling with relationship problems, family issues, anxiety, depression, substance use and trauma. Over the 17 years that I've been counseling, I've learned that everyone needs to tell their story, to be heard, and understood. I've learned compassion, kindness, and non-judgement are all important in the healing process.

Our practice is a communion of science and faith: the latest evidence-based psychotherapy modalities combined with ancient and medieval philosophy. we rely on the work of Greek and Roman thinkers, as well as Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Ignatius of Loyola, and others. If you are willing to put in the work, we will maximize your time to help you become more authentically YOU. No matter what you're going through, there are some things that can always help. Breathing. Grounding work. Positive self-talk. When we meet we would tailor a treatment program to meet your needs. Appointments are available days, evenings, and Saturdays.

Most of Don's clients are people who identify as Christians who are struggling with relationship issues, life transitions, or addictions while some of them may seek only spiritual guidance and practical application. They are generally seeking someone who is extremely knowledgeable, well educated, and experienced. These are generally people who are looking for someone they can trust and confide in without the fear of being judged. They usually want help navigating life in order to experience personal healing and growth without compromising their values.

Not accepting new clients
Sometimes we just need someone who is not involved with our situation with to listen and provide us with an unbiased professional opinion. We may need some extra help making a difficult decision or may need to learn new strategies to manage a mental health or substance abuse condition of either ourselves or that of a loved one. My goal is to provide you with a professional and trusting environment to address your issues. You may believe that your problems are too shameful to talk about and that you are hopeless. There is hope. EMDR trained. Exclusively online.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
