Are you questioning your relationship with alcohol or other substances? Have you struggled to cut back or control your use? Maybe your connections with friends and family are fading, or you’re drifting further from the life you envisioned. I work with adults and adolescents exploring their relationship with destructive behaviors, including substance use and gambling. Whether you're committed to change or just beginning to question things, I'll strive to create a judgment-free space where you can turn down the noise, tell your story, and reconnect with who and what is important to you.

The vast majority of my clinical work has been involved in navigating crisis situations, serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and behavioral health challenges with the Veteran population.
It can be difficult to ask for help or show up for ourselves when life becomes overwhelming or challenging. Since you’re here reading this, you’ve already taken the first step in showing up for yourself and recognizing that you might benefit from added support. As a therapist, it is important to me that my clients have an open, nonjudgmental, and reflective space to navigate the unique barriers to accessing their best lives. My goal is to support you through life’s challenges in a way that works and feels right for you.

You dread the sound of your alarm clock in the morning and desperately look forward to bedtime before the day has started. You feel on edge and overwhelmed. You no longer go out with friends because you’re exhausted from caring for others. Anxiety is scary and can disrupt your life. It is exhausting. You deserve a life that is enjoyable and worth living.

I’ve been a mental health counselor for 20 years and I am also a Certified Grief Specialist. I have a passion for helping people experiencing grief and loss. Loss can be concrete or abstract. Many major life changes can lead to the feeling of grief, including the death of a family member, friend or pet; or the loss of relationship or a job. The journey of grief is an individual one, and can be lonely, but you don’t need to walk it alone. I am here to help you navigate the difficult journey you are on.

My style is curious, collaborative and nonjudgmental. Seeing the best in people and respecting client's needs and pace, creates a safe and comfortable space where people feel heard and understood. I listen for what is needed and helpful in the moment, move clients toward stress reduction, and through conflict resolution, life transitions and other relationship issues. I offer tools and homework for healing and change. The tools are aimed at creating: respectful relationships, positive communication, collaboration, improved personal performance, enhancing personal authority and creating a more grounded sense of self in relationships.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
