YOUNG AND ADULT MEN: We are expected to handle a lot: stress, frustrations, work, school, relationships, you name! And, all those things aren’t suppose to get to us. Why is that? Most people believed men can handle anything thrown at us and not be phase...and, we can...most of the time. But, that facade only lasts for little while, then, we crack. I get it! I’ve been there! We look the part, fix the problem, and stuff our emotions. After a while, it all begins to grind on us and that’s when we turn to things to help us numb or check-out. In retrospect, those things worked well at the time but now they're just making matters worse.

Stephen specializes in helping couples work through connection issues and individuals work through issues of trauma, anxiety, and depression. Stephen has a particular interest in working with people struggling with matters of gender and sexuality and those who have experienced spiritual abuse and shame as a result. Prior to returning to the field of psychotherapy, Stephen had a career in law enforcement working as a police officer in St. Louis city and as an FBI agent before coming to terms with the fact that he was better suited to be an agent of mercy and healing rather than an agent of justice.

In the context of individual therapy, I use different treatment modalities dependent upon a client's goals and needs. I am certified in Emotion Focused Therapy and primarily use this treatment modality with couples and families. I am also Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) trained.

My specialties center around helping professional men and women, athletes (current/former HS,College,Pro) and teenage boys. Each individual is different but if you are my client you will be validated, cared for and feel like a semi rockstar at times. My previous experience as a professional football player taught me people will grow if they have someone in their corner who cares, understands, and compassionately challenges them on a consistent basis. My therapeutic approach is client-centered and integrative in nature, while being deeply influenced by attachment theory. In my experience both as a client and as a therapist, Emotionally Focused Therapy is the most powerful therapeutic approach to couples therapy. Too often, people focus on the content of what is wrong ("Why can't he load the dishwasher correctly?" or "Why won't she stop nagging me?") rather than the process of what is actually happening ("I need to feel respected and heard" or "I need more connection"). EFT has been found through much research to effect lasting change and connection.
