My approach as a therapist is to work in a collaborative manner to explore underlying thought and behavioral habits that cause stress. Through continuous efforts to apply oneself in this direction, many find unwanted habits begin to exert less of an influence on one's life and a steady growth of relieving qualities of mind can emerge: a sense of connectedness, resilience, flexibility, care, purpose, and wisdom. I work from a relational orientation. This entails examining styles of relating to oneself, others, the world, and at times even examining the therapy relationship itself.

I support individuals and couples through challenges and transitions to improve the quality of their lives. One focus of my practice is in Perinatal Mental Health (Pregnancy and Postpartum) including mood and anxiety disorders, depression, miscarriage, stillbirth, pregnancy or birth complications, trauma and grief, or difficulties bonding with your baby. I work with couples struggling with relationship issues including the impact having a baby has on a relationship, parenting challenges and healthy communication. Other treatment specialties include substance abuse, relational trauma, emotional regulation, and suicidality.

"My area of specialization is in working with adults with trauma, PTSD, overwhelming stress, anxiety, and depression related problems. I have worked and am trained extensively with issues of PTSD, Narcissistic Abuse, infidelity/betrayal (attachment traumas), past abuse, grief, combat, and past events that can create distress. Many events in the past can have a traumatic effect which can carry over and create problems in the here and now. I also have extensive experience working with Military, Veterans, and Family Members. Angela Lujan, LMHC, CMHS, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Child Mental Health Specialist. Angela has worked over the last several years with children/teens/young adults and their families, helping navigate relational hardships and conflicts. Angela is particularly drawn to working with youth and adults who struggle with interpersonal relationships, bullying, self-image issues, anxiety, depression, self-harm, grief and loss, trauma, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, concerns with school performance, and various other emotional and behavioral challenges.

Healing involves turning toward those places in us that we’d rather turn away from—those places that shame or pain has shut down or disconnected. This may sound counterintuitive, because there are good reasons for turning from those places of pain. But you already know how this kind of truncated life diminishes your ability to thrive. As a somatic psychotherapist I recognize the body as a powerful communicator and holder of story. Getting back down into the body to feel what you feel and know what you know leads to greater imagination, energy, and wholeness.

Therapy is a place for yourself or your loved one to take time to build self-care, self-reflection, insight and skills to manage the symptoms they are experiencing. Many adults and youth experience symptoms of depression, anxiety or are overcoming issues of past trauma that plays in to their ability to go about life. Sometimes relationships, school or work are harder to navigate, build or maintain. Sometimes self-esteem and self-worth can interfere with our abilities to experience healthy relationships whether that is with friends, peers or family members. Coming to therapy can help you build skills to navigate these hardships.

School and peer relationships can be some of the biggest struggles for today's kids and their families. Maybe your child never wants to go to school or has conflict with his/her social group at school. Maybe your child struggles to keep up in class and with homework or constantly butts heads with his/her teacher and peers. I can help! I enjoy partnering with kids and their families who are struggling with educational and behavioral challenges of all kinds.
