Does this sound like you? Feeling hopeless over your persistent racing thoughts? Feeling so exhausted after work that you lay in bed instead of making dinner? Or asking yourself if you’ll ever feel “normal” again after a loved one passed? At Emerge Counseling, I work with people daily who have had the same thoughts. I assist my clients in realizing how these thoughts and feelings make them human, while utilizing evidence-based treatment to provide support and therapeutic skills to manage these feelings outside of the therapy office. Whether its anxiety, grief (including pet loss), burnout, or a life transition, I am here to support.

My name is Dan Dashner. I am dually licensed in the treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. As a therapist, I prefer to look beyond labels and identify and resolve root causes for emotional pain and suffering. Clients I work with are typically individuals, couples, and families who are experiencing some form of emotional discomfort, or emotional pain. Sometimes this is stress brought on by recent changes to work, family, or significant relationships. Other times the focus of therapy is with clients who've made repeated but unsuccessful attempts at resolving a persistent condition.

My name is Stephen Feest, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I approach therapy as person-centered and establishing strengths before addressing distress. In my therapeutic approach, I tend to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I like to use methods and skills from other theoretical approaches such as DBT if I feel it will benefit the patient. I have worked with adolescents, adults, and the geriatric populations. I enjoy working with patients on self-improvement, ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, and adjustment disorders.

I work with adults 25+ in WI and IL. My clients are those who want to do deeper therapeutic work, explore personal growth, and traverse challenging relationship dynamics (familial, romantic, or otherwise). I treat clients experiencing mood disorders, identity issues, personality disorders, anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, and those dealing with sexual, relationship, and intimacy problems. Often, a crisis or a crossroads brings folks to therapy and the treatment process allows them to make life-long improvements to the quality of their lives.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
