My approach is grounded in CBT and I often utilize different modalities, such as trauma informed care and strength-based approaches, in order to tailor the therapeutic experience to you and your needs.
Life can be complex, messy, and difficult to function in. Working with both individuals and couples/families, there is no limit to what kind of issues or goals you can have for therapy. Anxiety, eating disorders, work/school stress, depression, transitional stress, and family trauma don't even begin to scratch the surface of what you can bring to the session when you meet with me.

Dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety can be incredibly challenging. The consequences of trauma often include struggling with long-term depression & anxiety. Moreover, one can just feel overwhelmed from everyday societal pressures like interpersonal issues, financial stress and the climate crisis. Everyone deserves a safe space to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment and I am here to help you do that.

When working with clients, I use an eclectic approach, which means that I am schooled in many theoretical orientations and have mastered an infinite number of skills. I draw from the knowledge I possess to adapt my approach to the person or people in front of me. I believe that the most important part of the therapeutic process is the relationship between the therapist and the client/clients. Building rapport and establishing a relationship based on acceptance, empathy, honesty, safety and trust with my clients is my first priority as the therapist. One of my innate skills is being non-judgmental.

In helping children, teens, and their families, I employ a combination of compassion, creativity, understanding, and humor with clinically proven treatment methods. During my 15+ years of experience I have found that a good collaborative therapeutic relationship combined with skill-based strategies and techniques results in positive and lasting changes. I typically begin treatment with a thorough assessment and treatment plan. Treatment incorporates both parent and child interventions. I routinely communicate with pediatricians, teachers and school personnel to assist in resolving the issues of children and teens, with parental permission.

Right now, you're looking at this because something in your life isn't working. You're anxious, sad, withdrawn, frustrated...not the person you want to be. Chances are, this isn't the first therapist's profile you've read and you're overwhelmed with choices. Part of you may even feel like giving up, but you know you can't. People in your life need you; most importantly, YOU need you, and you need to start feeling better now. You're not alone in your struggle, you don't have to be alone in your progress, and there is hope for change.

People! Am I right? People are complex and confusing—and not just other people. The most confusing people we know can be ourselves. Together we can explore how your past experiences have shaped who you are today. You will gain self-understanding, self-compassion, and begin to feel happier and more fulfilled. I can help you navigate unwanted emotions and get you ready to cope with any difficult life circumstances that arise in the future. My past clients have described me as “non-judgmental, kind, and someone who calls them on their bullshit.” If this sounds like what you are looking for, please email me!

When things are difficult, it can isolate us, drain our emotional reserves, and limit our ability to look at things in new ways. I work to help clients appreciate the depth of their experience, and support them toward personal strength and healthier relationships. My style is open, collaborative, direct, and supportive. I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years in private practice. I also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Rochester's Counseling Center for many years.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
