My ideal client is someone who is currently lost or overwhelmed and wanting to come alive again after a major loss or transition. Or has been dealing with a physical illness, and now wants support in coming back into life in a new way. It can be easy to forget that we are not the lives we have created, we are so much more. Having help recognizing where you are going and why, and dealing with the problems that show up along the way can be necessary in looking at exactly what is happening, why they are happening, and what you want/need to change to make things so much easier to handle so you can bring in joy, peace, and your dreams.

We all tend to search for the same things within and outside of ourselves. We want to feel loved, seen, heard, understood, important and worthy. We want to feel alive, good about ourselves and what we do each day. We have internalized negative, limiting beliefs about ourselves, others and life that keep us stuck. We have adapted to our experiences in order to survive and these skills may no longer serve us.

Accepting New Clients! Sometimes in life it seems like nothing can go right, that one bad day turned into a week and now a year, your thoughts aren’t even making sense! Other times everything is going well, you couldn’t ask for a more “perfect” life but inside it doesn’t feel quite right.

Are you feeling stuck, defeated, and struggling to manage your or your child's emotions? It can be hard just to make it through the day. I know life is really hard and we are all facing challenging times. Taking that first step to ask for help can be difficult, you are not alone. I think everyone would be surprised at actually how many of us need and can use a little extra support, whether it be for yourself or your child. You don't have to continue to feel this way.

I have been working with grief, both normal and complicated, for over 30 years and have specialized training in treating both. For those who are going through a normal albeit difficult time coping with the loss of a loved one, or if you are a caregiver for someone with a stressful illness (e.g., cancer, Alzheimer's), help is here. I also have extensive experience in treating the needs of the LGBTQ community. I strongly prefer to meet clients in person due to the type of interventions I utilize that are more effective this way.

I have been a psychotherapist for several decades and have been trained in a variety of therapy approaches: client-centered, psychodynamic, humanistic, relational, feminist/gender, and mindfulness. I work with individual adults and adolescents. I believe in the connections between our youth and our current situations. I see the psychotherapeutic process as a client's journey in which I have been invited to participate. My view of the goal of psychotherapy is to assist a person in making changes to his/her perceptions, interpretations, reactions and/or behavior in order to enhance the quality of that person's life.

The truth of what is essential to know, you are whole just as you are, and you do not need to be, fixed. You may have been through unforgettable experiences that created the belief you are not good enough or that you are less than enough. All of these untruthful messages get internalized and often become the story of your inner critic. This builds an even stronger falsehood. What is wrong with me? This health crisis can stir up emotions of disconnection. Therapy will expand your capacity to cope and ignite your sense of hope. Hope has the power to build resilience and support mental wellness even in difficult times.

Therapy is a collaborative relationship. I work with clients to develop a safe and trusting relationship that we can use to explore challenging interpersonal patterns, to work through stressful life events and conflicts, and to better understand the motivations underlying our behavior. Through the therapeutic relationship, we can develop an awareness of the impact thoughts, emotions, behaviors and interpersonal relationships have on the way we cope with life events. By understanding how the past impacts the present we can gain insight into our current issues and develop the skills to manage the challenges in our daily lives.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
