I like to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy and strength-based approaches to help my clients develop the skills they need to live out the best version of themselves.
I think it’s safe to say life is hard. There is so much going on in the world and in our lives that it can be hard to navigate everything that is placed in front of us. We all go through struggles and challenges and it’s okay to seek professional help for them. Growing up as a Chinese American, I recognize the complexities of family and social dynamics and how it can have an immense impact in who we become and how we view ourselves.

I believe in the uniqueness of people, not just as individuals, but from moment to moment as well. My approach in talk therapy is to try to understand clients deeply, while keeping in mind that I will never know 100%. I consider clients’ upbringing, religion, politics, style, and opinions, but I put particular emphasis on the relationship between myself and clients. My hope is that sessions with me are warm, challenging, thought-provoking and thoughtful, so expect sessions to include tears, laughter and profound moments of appreciation for life, its difficulties and rewards.

When we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck, managing everyday stressors can feel impossible. Therapy can help. From processing and navigating thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to learning new ways to manage stress, family, and/or interpersonal challenges, therapy can help you find a better balance in everyday life and facilitate personal growth. Therapy looks different for every individual and there are times in which personal growth can appear action-packed with significant changes in habits and ways of thinking, while other times growth is marked by staying still and acknowledging the present moment.

Is anxiety, depression, or trauma holding you back from being your true self? Do you feel stuck in managing difficult life transitions? Now, every little thing becomes super overwhelming. Those negative experiences reopen old wounds and cause new ones. You tried burying your pain hoping it would go away. You feel lonely and tormented. You feel exhausted, stressed, and angry all the time. You wonder how much more you can take. You are unsure of who or where to turn for help. In the midst of this painful journey, you do not have to go through it alone.

When we are exposed to trauma at an early age, it can seriously impact how we feel about ourselves and our relationships with others. Trauma can also profoundly affect whether we feel this is a safe world and can contribute to depression, anxiety, and relational/familial issues. My practice is from a strengths-based, trauma-informed perspective with a non-judgmental framework. I aim to understand clients’ internal responses and to provide more options for emotional regulation and problem-solving.

As a therapist who was born and raised in Hong Kong, I have had the opportunity to work with diverse clients of all backgrounds. I understand the unique challenges faced by children of immigrants, particularly those identifying as Asian American or emerging adults. Asian Americans often struggle with establishing a sense of belonging, internalized judgment of their thoughts, actions, and persistent feelings of inadequacy or shame. It can be challenging to exist between two or more different cultural norms, values, traditions, languages, familial obligations, social dynamics, and more.

Our journey in life is often filled with responsibilities towards ourselves and others. There are times that we are faced with situations where we feel stuck and do not quite understand how to navigate or make sense of why we responded in the way that we did and we want to change it. My goal is to support you in your journey of finding new coping skills/reframing your thought processes and finding healthier ways to live your best version of your life.  My approach to therapy is that you are in control and I am here to support you. The analogy I like to tell my clients is that "you are the driver of the car and I am next to you

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
