For over 26 years I have been working with people seeking improvements in their personal lives or relationships. I welcome individuals, couples or families from all backgrounds whether their concerns are personal or relational. My approach is “strength-based,” which means that I look for client competencies and resources, and try to avoid pathologizing people because of their problems, past or diagnoses. How often and how long the therapy will last depends on client goals and treatment needs and will be mutually agreed upon. The atmosphere in my office is relaxed and warm, and clients are always treated with dignity and respect.

I utilize a person-centered and strength-based approach to help clients identify their strengths and help them utilize these strengths to succeed in life.
I believe individuals are worthy of experiencing their best quality of life. Sometimes to achieve this, it requires a partnership with another person to help bring change. Together we can set goals and work to address your current stressors that get in the way of you experiencing the life you want to have. Whether you or your loved one have a substance use disorder, a history of trauma, or experience high levels of anger or anxiety, there is relief, and I am here to help you. I also enjoy working with couples to navigate the many stressors relationships encounter and work toward a healthier and more fulfilling connection.

To meet the client where he/she/they are at, I implement an eclectic approach to counseling including theoretical models such as cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered, and strength-based to assist in life’s challenges.
Obstacles, barriers, bumps, and other synonyms for negative events that occur in life can leave feelings of despair and emptiness which leads to negative thinking and low self-esteem or self-worth. As wonderful as life is, we experience pain and stress. Amazingly, in most instances, we are able to cope with adverse events and continue enjoying life; however, sometimes, the pain feels too much to bear. Too much to bear alone. Too much to “burden” our families and friends with, or at least that’s how it feels. Talk therapy can provide that safe space for healing and help regain hope.

I am a collaborative and strength-based therapist.
Most of my clients come to me at a point in their life where they no longer recognize themselves or their relationships. They've put much on the back-burner for so long that they loose their identity. They wake up to a life with little passion, little desire, and very little will. This issue is typically their subconscious letting them know that how they've been living is no longer conducive on their journey of growth and success. If you are having or have had this experience, then it is my goal to help you identify and remove those blocks to put you back on the course where you experience life and relationships to their fullest.

Many people believe therapy is a quick fix, or more accurately that a therapist can “fix” us or our problems. In reality, therapy is a process that can take time, but most importantly, hard work. Have you struggled with anxiety, depression, or maintaining social connections? Do you need to repair or restore your marriage? Take first steps in preparing for marriage? Learn how to connect as a family? Find a new normal after divorce? Heal from a loss? Navigate the waters of being a teenager and managing your parents and teacher's expectations? As a therapist with over 18 years of experience, I am excited to help you begin.

Hi! Please call me Kat. While change can be done alone, it is often fragmented and limited to our self-awareness. I believe that the transformative power that comes from a safe, supportive, and empathic relationship can act as a fertilizer and accelerate personal and transformational growth. It is through connectedness and relationships that we can see our blind spots, discover our incongruences, and get in contact with our more authentic selves. Pursuing change in a vacuum can often leave us in a feedback loop. We may need help to redirect our focus and energy towards a more productive path.

Strength-Based Therapists

How does strength-based therapy work?

During strength-based therapy sessions, the therapist will ask about an individual’s experiences of stress, pain, or trauma with the goal of orienting the client to view themselves as a survivor rather than a victim, and focusing on their strengths rather than on their weaknesses. In framing a client’s personal narrative along these lines, the therapist and client work together to identify existing skills that can be harnessed.

Is strength-based therapy evidence-based?

Strength-based therapy is an evidence-based treatment that has been studied extensively and shown to be effective across domains. The treatment has been found to be particularly effective in helping individuals who are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health concerns. Strength-based therapy has been used by therapists to help clients for more than 60 years.

How long does strength-based therapy last?

There’s no precise timeline for strength-based therapy. The duration of treatment depends on the individual’s specific needs and goals and the severity of their concerns. Some individuals may find they achieve their therapeutic goals quickly, while others might benefit from ongoing support and guidance in order to continue progressing.

How effective is strength-based therapy?

Clinical research and decades of practice have shown strength-based therapy to be an effective treatment to improve mental health and well-being for many conditions. The treatment can engender a sense of connection and collaboration between the therapist and the individual, fostering a positive therapeutic relationship. For individuals with narcissistic tendencies, strength-based therapy may be less effective, as the focus on the individual’s strengths may undermine the work needed to honestly assess the challenges the individual faces.
