My path to becoming a therapist was more of a calling than a career decision. I’m not particularly suited to this profession. I’m introverted, which causes me to present as somewhat unfriendly and aloof to strangers. I’m really not concerned with small talk or what I consider the superficialities of life. But when it comes to exploring the deepest, most difficult and painful core aspects of your life that’s the space where I feel most comfortable. The foundation of my practice is my own personal journey in 12-step recovery. I would say I was "chosen" for the gift of recovery from a self-destructive lifestyle more than 33 years ago.
During graduate school, I was introduced to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a research-based model that is perfectly suited to my spiritual beliefs and values. Most recently in 2019, I was trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an incredible tool for processing traumatic memory and ending core negative beliefs.
The combination of ACT and EMDR offers a successful pathway for treatment. EMDR helps to heal the negative emotional residue that makes it so difficult to actually live mindfully in the present moment with a sense of acceptance. Experiencing EMDR helps you to "connect the dots" about your life, understanding how pain has actually shaped your life.
