I am sensitive to contextual implications of perspective, particularly surrounding the impact of the immediate environment, health, belief systems, spirituality and cultural identification.
Exhale. Inhale. Repeat. Simple things help us focus while the perspective of another gently reminds us who we really are. As a provider of mental health services for over 40 years and a middle-aged woman, I am able to provide insight through my professional and personal experience. Therapeutic techniques are based in heartfelt mindfulness specific to your individual needs. I believe everyone has inherent and intuitive desires towards positive emotional and physical health, my job is only to remind you of what you already know.

You are someone who is dedicated to self exploration and growth. You are not content to just skim the surface of life, but take every opportunity to listen closer, look deeper, and take each experience as an invitation to explore and to grow. Our work will focus on deepening your connection to your life - and explore what else is asking to be known.

Life is difficult and navigating your way through the world can be a lonely, painful experience. It leaves scars and memories that can turn the person in the mirror into a complete stranger. Depression, anxiety, pain, confusion and regret seem to keep pulling you down into an endless cycle. Discovering how to face your world, your circumstances, and more importantly, yourself, takes more than just will power. It can't be done alone, but it can be done.

Accepting clients. To survive in a traumatized, ego-centric culture filled with counterfeit images, we pay a steep price - trauma & pain in our disconnected bodies, loneliness & broken-heartedness in our relationships, an unmet longing for passionate, meaningful engagement with the world. Crisis, illness, pain, suffering & despair become the catalyst for change, awakening our yearning for a more courageous, authentic, embodied life. Speaking to us through symptoms, grief, images, longings, dreams- the soul calls- beckoning us into the unknown, asking us to surrender what no longer serves us. I help people navigate this wilderness.

Many people say life doesn't go according to plan. We all know that to be true. Life goes up and down with many bits and pieces that make our story. As we are going through our life we may not understand or want parts of our story that entail grief and pain. YOUR story is what makes you, what has happened in your life, and what hasn't happened in your life. Many of us tend to have expectations of who we are supposed to be and how to navigate life, that we may forget to live life. Life isn't about pushing through, dread and pain. It's about the hope that pain and loss can be grieved and change can happen in your heart.

Therapy is about you – your successes and strengths, your stumbles and hurts, your needs and goals. Pain has a way of making us feel isolated and alone. It can tear us up on the inside while hiding from others on the outside. We often believe that we are feeling pain because we are not doing something right, so we think that if we just “try harder” or “do better” then we can make the hurt go away. Often, our pain is like a warning light on the dashboard of our car. It’s trying to tell us something important that, if ignored, could be dangerous and impair our ability to function well - or at all.

You are meant to have a life that is deeply meaningful and fulfilling, where you trust your experiences, know you belong, and find spirituality is a source of joy.
Are you feeling anxious and overwhelmed while navigating questions of faith, deconstruction, or religious trauma, and looking for clarity and peace? When you’re questioning the beliefs you grew up with or struggling to make sense of a traumatic religious experience, it can feel like the ground underneath you is giving way. Maybe you disagree with a key doctrine or you had a painful experience. Perhaps you've left your faith community. It’s lonely and frightening to not feel like there is a safe place for you to figure things out, where you will be heard, understood, and accepted as you are. You’re anxious, confused, and exhausted.

Sometimes we encounter hardships that seem too overwhelming or painful to manage. These struggles may occur in marriage, family relationships, parenting, at work, or coping with every-day life. They can be destabilizing, leaving us feeling hopeless and helpless. I believe these uncomfortable emotions can often be a window of opportunity to look deeper into what has happened, our role in it, and our reaction to it. Within these moments, we can unravel our own inner wisdom to help us heal and grow.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
