Other things that bring me joy are my family, sports, spirituality, gardening, music, theater, literature, and technology.
I am accepting new clients and offer Online Counseling via Telehealth. I've provided over 10,000 hours of therapy and like Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life." I managed LDS Family Services for 13 years and loved directing the 12-step Addiction Recovery Program in Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. I've been recruited by multiple residential treatment centers, a hospital, a skilled nursing facility, and by an IOP program assessing and treating substance abuse and domestic violence.

Consider all the areas impacted: relationships, work, school, self-care, spirituality, intimacy, happiness.
The impact of our histories seems to last forever. We can be crippled by moments of regret, embarrassment, and pain, and we can suffer from physical tension, mood swings, aches, and issues focusing. We lose sleep, eat poorly, settle for mediocre work with mediocre pay, get into unfulfilling relationships, have troubled intimacy, and continue suffering day-to-day where we get stuck. We can easily see this reality is unwanted, but what can be done about it?

I have worked with adults, couples, college students, and teens with a range of experiences including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, marital or relationship issues, family relational concerns, grief support, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. Trauma affects us all, unfortunately for some, trauma can cause problems beyond the ability to cope. When triggered, the brain can get stuck in fight or flight mode, limiting one's ability to think rationally and function in daily life. Another part of living with the effects of trauma is dealing with the difficult and painful emotions which can cause problems in our relationships and can negatively impact our connections with others. Depression, anxiety, grief, anger, confusion, frustration, shame, and isolation can all be a result of unresolved trauma.

I see individuals that desire and are willing to work at creating better relationships and lives. Sometimes we may feel stuck; unable to control our emotions and thought processes. I bring hope and tools to help provide healing and growth. We get a clear picture and understanding of what we want the outcome of therapy to be. We come up with priorities to work on and then experience interventions that create awareness, understanding, skills, hope and motivation to do what works! We then do our homework. We continue in this process, making any adjustments, till we achieve our "healthier life"!

I’ve helped many people in my career who have struggled with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and relationship difficulties because of trauma, abuse, loss, or other high-stress experiences from their past. It’s not just the events we’ve experienced, but rather the result of how those events continue to affect us. I help patients retain learning and wisdom from their past but lose the pain. Everyone who steps into my office will be valued, heard, and respected no matter how difficult the issues may be to talk about. I respect and treat each person as I would want my own family member treated.

Life is difficult. All of us are faced with stress, pain, loss, and feeling out of control in our lives. Sometimes, even the strongest people you know need a little bit of help to work through life’s more difficult problems. You may be experiencing some of your own life’s challenges and feel you have done all you can to cope, yet find things are not changing or improving. You may not know exactly where to go for help, who the best person would be to talk to, or what to expect from therapy. These are normal questions and concerns. All of us here at New Beginnings Counseling Group want to reassure you…You are in the right place!

I am accepting new clients! I recognize the importance of connection, safety and trust within the therapeutic relationship. Brene Brown wrote, "Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light". Shame diminishes that light within us and tells us we are not worthy. We feel broken. It is in this brokenness that we can find strength, just as the Japanese art of Kintsugi does. We can find ways to work through depression, grief, and anxiety with courage and start to find what matters to you and work toward it together. I can help you find hope and meaning in your life again.

There's an intuitive sense within us that knows when it’s time to heal; time to fully process and release the old wounds, and thus create the genuine space for new things to grow. Relationships matter deeply – including our relationship with ourselves. I work with clients who have already begun to listen to themselves and know it’s time to take a deeper healing journey inward, make genuine life changes and ultimately increase their capacity for healthy, authentic connection with others. I work collaboratively and compassionately to empower my clients to sift through the difficult pieces that have historically gotten in the way.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
