Faith and spirituality of all kinds can be incorporated into your treatment planning process and utilized as support.
Does it feel as though your spirit is being drained by your past? Have past traumas taken over your identity and quashed your joy? I have 15 years experience serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes. I would be honored to walk you through the process of healing and understanding. Guiding you to a deeper understanding of what you experienced, and how it impacts the human brain, body, and spirit. You are having a normal human reaction to an abnormal experience. I provide a safe space where your story can be witnessed without judgment. A safe space where you can feel the pain and be guided

The funny things about life's hurts, they generally do not just get better on their own. Running from a problem is a race we will never win. My goal is to create a warm safe and relaxed place for you to explore, to discuss, to learn and maybe laugh. The outcome is for you to feel empowered in your life and to have HOPE. Changing or healing often require learning new skills so my approach is as much about coaching as it is about counseling. My primary counseling modes are Cognitive Dissonance and Reframing and REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy). Together we create the tools for HOPE that are custom made for you.

The behaviors and emotions of grief, loss, and trauma are complex. Healing in mind, body, and spirit can be accomplished through traditional and spiritual counseling as well as guided meditation, spiritual structure, and goal setting. When clients are experiencing an inability to move forward, find it difficult to come to terms with life, cannot balance emotions and spirit, are enduring high levels of anxiety and stress, and are recognizing that their energy levels and physical body strength are at risk, the counseling of Dr. Marshall, an experienced counselor who uses Judeo-Christian and Buddhist principles can help heal.

Clients will feel a sense of caring and unconditional positive regard when in session with me. I recognize there is a delicate balance between being an empathetic listener and expert coach of skills; I hope to bring a collaborative approach to our work together. Clients have told me they feel supported by me without feeling that I have an “agenda” for them. I am most passionate about supporting individual adults through relational concerns, attachment issues, traumatic experiences, and symptoms of anxiety/depression. I also enjoy working with children and their parents utilizing play therapy interventions.

Life is hard and is often so very different from what we imagined it would be. We wrestle day in and day out with disappointment--the sadness that comes from recognizing the gap between reality and how we imagined our lives would look. We lament the gravity of our history and the way it has come between us and our dreams. We suffer the shame of recognizing how our choices have shaped our current situations. We study the wounds we carry as reminders of the pain that has been inflicted upon us. We mourn our weary past and fear the unknown future. After all we've been through, how can we expect to hold onto hope for a better tomorrow?

Life can be very stressful, and different things may bring someone to therapy. I provide a safe place to explore and learn, as I offer my compassion and support through your journey. I have a lot of experience with stress and/or trauma, as well as relationship issues. I tend to be gentle, compassionate, offer solutions and homework assignments, but realize deep down you have the answers, and are hard wired to heal under the right circumstances. I see primarily individuals and couples due to my schedule being strictly daytime (business hours)

Life can often be overwhelming. I can help you tap into your inner strength and personal power so you can make the changes needed to feel better and create a more fulfilling life. Whether you are looking into counseling for some personal growth or because you are hanging by a thread, I can provide you tools for healing and reaching your goals. There is nothing weak about being in the care of a counselor. It's STRONG. You are not passively waiting for your strength or healing. You are doing the work. It's my privilege to be a part of that process.

I want to help with your problem(s) but also your life in the future. We’ll focus on what’s currently interfering with your daily life. Success requires you to make changes, set short term goals, prioritize, and develop long term goals. CHANGE requires an open mind regardless of your issues, needs, or goals. Independent of what you want and why. Change is not easy, the process is not steady, and will likely include setbacks. Long term change requires modifying your thoughts such as the interactions of feelings and logic.

Many of us have been emotionally wounded by family members, friends, loved ones, co-workers, and/or strangers. Psychological suffering can take on many forms, showing up in our thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships. Sometimes it can be experienced as sadness, depression, worry, anxiety, etc. This form of suffering, while painful, often points to the parts of ourselves that invite healing. And while the challenges of living with such experiences can be immense, they also present opportunities for growth. The truth is that you can find peace of mind, solace in your heart, and live joyfully, regardless of your past.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
