I came to Humboldt County in 2001, after completing my psychology degree in Europe and my master's degree in psychotherapy in Syracuse, New York. I have practiced psychotherapy for the last 30 years, and I am familiar with a wide range of issues, situations and diagnosis. Although, I enjoy specific theoretical and practical approaches and models of therapy like CBT, SFBT for treating anxiety, trauma impact and depression symptoms, I clinically focus on what I believe suits best the individual and the situation. I view life as a journey towards betterment of the person and reach for happiness.

As a therapist, my goal is to work with you in order to help you live the life you desire. Together we can examine the past, identify internal and external barriers, explore values, and plan for the future. Authenticity, humility, and social justice are at the core of my work. I approach therapy from a client centered, humanistic, and ACT/CBT orientation.

I have been working with people for 30 years and look forward to helping clients create healthy relationships with me, themselves and with those in their lives. I enjoy working with individuals from all racial and cultural backgrounds who are motivated to make changes in their lives; to reduce painful reactions; and increase their understanding of what makes them feel happy, strong and self assured. I encourage clients to do homework assignments in between therapy sessions, in an effort to help clients take ownership of their process, and learn coping skills that will last beyond treatment.

Sometimes the stresses and difficulties of life can become too challenging to face on our own, and we need additional therapeutic input to navigate these obstacles and build resiliency. This can include past or present trauma, addiction, rejection, loneliness, grief, relational conflict or other struggles that continue to challenge us. I see the therapeutic relationship as a dynamic partnership between client and therapist and believe in a holistic approach to therapy encompassing mind, body, and spirit.

I have experience working with a wide variety of individuals and have worked in medical settings, counseling centers, churches, and non-profits. At this time I have the most experience working with survivors of childhood abuse and trauma. I also enjoy working with patients that are wanting to explore their identity, whether that be personal, career, or sexual identity. I have a strong value for attuned relationships and appropriate boundaries as I believe that in order to be the best versions of ourselves we must feel able to keep ourselves safe while building fulfilling and healing relationships.

My goal as a therapist is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their emotional needs and overcome the obstacles which are keeping them from experiencing their fullest potential. I utilize a non-judgmental, compassionate and collaborative approaches in therapy to support clients in addressing their life, relationships and the challenges they face. As part of the therapeutic process, I may use several techniques including art, sand tray, role-play, mindfulness practices, play therapy approaches and activities to work on at home.

Many times the journey of counseling is initiated by a life crisis, when one's resources have been exhausted and it is time to gather more tools for life's tool box. It is an act of strength to reach out, not a weakness. My diverse counseling career has prepared me to work effectively with people from various walks of life. I am not a fixer, I see myself as a facilitator of change. One of my main goals as a therapist is to teach people skills needed to increase feelings of independence and empowerment.

Among the issues that I work with in therapy are life transitions, depression, anxiety, midlife issues, self-esteem, creativity, aging, stress, grief, relationship issues including LGBT, women's issues, the fear of flying, and the emotional issues that come with Celiac disease. I work with individuals to find new and more positive approaches to the challenges of life. I offer both short-term issue-focused therapy and long-term more depth-oriented work in which you can make better choices rooted in your core values.

I believe the development of a secure and collaborative relationship is the most important aspect of the work I do with clients. Working from a strengths-based and relational perspective in a trauma informed manner, I have experience working with at-risk youth, families, and adults using a multi-theoretical approach including attachment theory, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, narrative therapy, neuroscience research, and alternative therapies such as art and nature therapy. I love helping youth and adults through change and deep transformation so that they can actualize their goals in life.

We all need help occasionally. Learning how to approach and overcome these challenges shape us and allow us to experience life to the fullest. Therapy allows us to look at where we may be blocked and helps us find our own answers to living an authentic life. For over 40 years I have had the privilege of providing competent, compassionate, caring psychotherapy and personal, business and optimal health coaching services to a wide range of people. I work by phone and by telemedicine online internationally.I know techniques that rapidly and effectively lower anxiety. I am the author of two books and have an international reputation as a consultant, educator and coach.I have an extensive background in Integrative Psychology and natural health.I work with natural cycles and timing.

In my practice, I work with all age groups but specialize in working with at-risk youth and their families. I have worked extensively with children and adolescents in both school and community-based settings as well as providing therapy within the home. This allows me to provide in-the-moment parent coaching and support and formulate both therapeutic and behavioral plans for my clients and their families. I have also worked closely with children and teens who have an autism diagnosis, providing them and their families with support tools to help regulate behavior and reach their individual potential.

I work with my clients to address a wide range of mental health and life challenges, addressing problematic patterns of behavior. I have extensive clinical training in a range of psycho-therapeutic modalities including group therapy, trauma treatments, harm reduction, EMDR, CBT, and substance use treatments. I am currently in ongoing training in somatic psychotherapies and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). The ultimate goal of therapy is improving functioning in life activities and quality of life.
