My intention is to create a welcoming, depth-oriented and respectful therapeutic relationship. I lean toward a holistic approach that recognizes the wholeness of all persons and individualizes treatment. The value of genuine warmth, feeling seen and unconditional positive regard is not lost on me. My style pulls from multiple theoretical lenses, such as a Narrative, Somatic, DBT, Trauma-informed and Humanistic lens. Mindfulness and spirituality are intertwined in my work. From a multicultural lens, I welcome all genders, expressions, populations and sexualities.

I will help you uncover the authentic self that lies beneath years of conditioning based on family and societal dynamics. You will learn how to be with and heal unprocessed pain. My style is a balance of empathy and active engagement. I love what I do, which will come through when we meet. My approach is holistic--a blend of insight with the principles and practice of mindfulness. I believe strongly in the unity of body and mind. I work with young to older individual adults and couples struggling with anxiety, relationship issues in particular mother-daughter enmeshment, trauma, and phase of life concerns.

For over a decade as a psychotherapist in several settings, I have witnessed insurmountable suffering when mental illness remains untreated. As an addict, you may feel powerless; that your life is unmanageable and consequences are escalating. Allow me to help you recover and explore what your life has to offer when you let go of shame, guilt and self-judgement. Transformation occurs in recovery as you move from isolation and despair, to a life of freedom and joy with endless possibilities. As a somatic practitioner, I use body felt-senses as well as a psychodynamic approach to help resolve traumas and increase your resiliency.

Life’s journey features many complex and dynamic processes. How we come to learn about ourselves and understand life around us is key in how we experience it. It is my belief that self-care with the purpose of healing and self discovery can radically improve our experience navigating everyday life and have powerful impacts in the world around us. Informed by principles of social justice and anti-oppression, I offer a space to work with you as an individual in context of communities that you are a part of and are important to you. My practice integrates psychodynamic, cognitive and mindfulness techniques.

My work and approach are to live in the here and now of present issues, while looking to the future and resolving underlying struggles from former experiences, so as to help us realize and work through the parts of ourself that have been challenged and which continue to be so. My 28+ years of pre-/and post Master's psychodynamic work with direct client and patient clinical treatment, along with my ongoing experience as a Yoga Teacher, and REBT training, inform my style and approach in working with individuals who are invested in developing a healthy sense of self and achieving healthier life goals.

Therapy can be awkward. The thought of sharing your inner thoughts and feelings with a stranger is scary. You might worry about being judged, misunderstood, or getting exposed. You might even have some bad experiences with a former therapist and are afraid of trying again. "Will this therapist understand cultural/family quirks?" "Will they think I am crazy if I share my religious experiences?" I get it! I help my clients work through anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, relationship issues, parenting problems, and spiritual concerns. This includes scrupulosity, religious trauma, and the spiritual/cognitive aspects of behavior.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
