I am deeply motivated and inspired by witnessing others become the best versions of themselves. I believe that the life experiences that I have had lend to my ability to empathize and help heal my clients. My approach to counseling includes a humanistic, person-centered approach. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which aims to look the connection between our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. I also believe strongly in the connection between the mind and the body. We will work together to learn skills to center the body and calm the mind. When our mind and body are healed, change occurs in our lives!

If I can help someone along the way then my life's living won't be in vain. Sometimes we can imagine where we want to be but just not quite sure how to get there. Life can throw us curve balls that take us off course. It can be beneficial to have someone to help navigate the rough waters and obstacles in our paths.

I am an interpersonal therapist who worked for 4 years in a college counseling center and have been working out of my private practice since 2010. While my overarching approach is interpersonal, I utilize other theories as needed. Cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, and emotionally focused therapy are examples of the other schools from which I pull. Clients are not a "one size fits all." Before becoming a therapist, I taught school for twenty years. I feel fortunate to have been able to work in two especially gratifying helping fields.

I enjoy working with adults of all ages in individual counseling. I can help you find your way through depression, anxiety, illness, disability, loss, grief and trauma. Counseling will help with any adjustment. Change is difficult whether it is living on your own for the first time, relocating to a new area, making a career move, getting married, getting divorced or retiring. The physical and mental health changes that occur with aging are particularly challenging. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance and want you to feel safe to share and explore your life.

Living with memories of abuse or other traumatic events can be exhausting and overwhelming. Life seems unbearable and you feel isolated and alone. You’ve tried to numb the pain with alcohol, drugs, work, food, or exercise. You've tried to block out the memories by keeping yourself so busy you don’t have time to think or feel. Maybe you cut your arms to escape the emotional pain by focusing on the physical pain. No matter how hard you've tried, you couldn't numb, block, or escape the memories. You want peace, healing, comfort, safety, and security. You want to feel loved and lovable. There IS hope and you CAN heal from your past.

ADHD is more than distraction or being unable to sit still. It affects every aspect of our lives. Maybe you're struggling with procrastination, time blindness, feeling "edgy," forgetting things, missing deadlines. You call yourself lazy but you just can't get moving to get things done. Maybe you've been told you're too sensitive- feeling easily hurt or angry. Those of us w/ADHD often feel shame and embarrassment from our actions- like saying things we regret or acting impulsively. We constantly feel like failures, always trying to hide our embarrassment. We'll often pretend we're fine and push through, but life feels overwhelming.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” ~Carl Rogers~ With over a decade in serving the child, adolescent, and family population, my heart is to come alongside children, families, and adults- joining them in their journey to a better quality of life. My hope is that regardless of the challenges that compel you to walk through the counseling door, you will leave knowing that you have an advocate, an ally, and an expert with clinical insight to help you identify the necessary tools to get you where you want to go.

How can I find a therapist in South Carolina?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or postcode; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In Canada, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
