Somatic and Sex Therapist. Now, what I’m about to share with you might be uncomfortable to read. If it is, then know this ... you did not find us by accident. This was a message you needed. You see, talking to your partner about your sexual relationship isn’t easy. You might feel like no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to connect – unaware of what gets them going and what turns them off. You may be unsatisfied with the type of intimacy you’re having but don’t know how to bring it up. Now, here’s the thing...you are not alone.

As a Queer therapist and spiritual companion, I like to do things a little differently. At this time in my career, I’m mostly working with beloved humans who are bravely journeying through deconstructing their religion of origin and are wanting to explore a spirituality beyond religion. I’m doing this because it was part of my story and was a life-altering transformation I wrestled on my own. The good news for me was coming out the other side as my truest self, and with a new expansive spirituality that feeds my seeker-soul and fills me with awe and wonder (without the rules and guilt/shame). You’re not alone! You belong here.

Immediate virtual openings Tues/Wed daytime as of 4/22/24. Hi, I'm Katie! Do you struggle with high stress or feeling down, but not sure how to feel better? Does it ever feel like it's getting worse as time goes on, which then increases your sense of hopelessness? It may feel like a vicious cycle. I can help you figure out the triggers, set goals and maintain them. I use evidenced-based techniques known as "CBT," or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (using the way you think to improve mood or stress) and distress tolerance skills so that you build that resiliency muscle- just like an athletic trainer would in a gym.

There's a joke that goes like this: a client was 10 minutes late for a session. When she arrived, she profusely apologized for being late. Maintaining poise, the therapist responded, "No problem. You're only late for your first session." Oftentimes I see clients who probably should have come in 2 years earlier than they did. During that time, they slog it though days and nights where getting out of bed is an achievement. My view is if you're already in pain, it's time to cash it in and get something for it. I've been there myself and have benefitted from the techniques that you and I will do together.

The mere thought of therapy can be daunting, while in actuality most of us ask for advice from those around us everyday. What makes therapy different from asking a coworker, friend or relative for their advice, is my approach to therapy. I believe therapy is allowing you the space to work out issues, the space to feel free and learn about yourself in new ways. Therapy is looking at your thoughts and behavioral patterns for maximum effectiveness to your desired goals. My approach is best summed up in a quote by Benjamin Franklin, “There are three things extremely hard: steel, a diamond, and to know one’s self.”

I'm Brittany, trained in trauma, anxiety, depression, sex & relationships, and an expert in the mind-body connection (somatic responses) w/in therapy.
Hey Wonder-Woman! It truly is a wonder how you wear so many hats, saving so many people, juggling so many tasks. Are you feeling worn down and burnt out? Are you struggling with friendships or having trouble connecting with your partner intimately? Feeling like your love-life is non-existent? Are you starting to feel stuck, empty, or unmotivated; maybe even anxious, plagued with worry, and overwhelmed? It can feel quite unbearable when all these emotions and racing thoughts are filling your daily life. You want to feel peace in your mind, heart, and relationships, but instead you feel turmoil; I understand.

I help individuals become aware of this connection, bringing attention to somatic clues that provide information to aid in the therapeutic process.
I begin therapy by building a strong relationship with my clients. It is my goal that you feel safe and cared for when we are together, and I do my best to step into your experience with you and feel what you are feeling. Clients find me nurturing and have confidence that I am helping them reach their goals. I enjoy working with couples, children, and individuals. With couples, I help uncover destructive relationship patterns and establish new patterns that bring healing, and mutual satisfaction. With children, I provide play therapy and work as a team with their parents and caregivers to reach their goals.

My passion for helping others to realize their dreams and overcome the obstacles caused by trauma, anxiety, grief, poor self-image, addictions and a myriad of other difficulties has led me to learn how closely associated emotional anguish can be with physical pain. In a warm and loving environment, I guide my clients one step at a time toward reaching their goals. I also utilize a variety of other approaches when indicated including CBT, DBT, and Narrative Therapy. I am uniquely trained in Somatic Experiencing and in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
