I'm Emily and I am a clinical therapist with a comprehensive and varied history of practice, including community non-profits, government, schools, treatment centers, and private practice. I encompass empathy, a spirit of collaboration and empowerment, and a skill set rooted in various therapeutic models and modalities. Utilizing an attachment and feminist theory lens, I incorporate elements of IFS (Internal Family Systems), narrative, and emotion-focused therapies, somatic and mindfulness practices, and art-based interventions when working with clients, adolescent to adult.

Waitlist for new clients
Life can be challenging. Sometimes these challenges come from outside of us (hurts others have caused us through their actions) and other times our challenges come from within (frustrating behavior patterns we just can't seem to shake, patterns of thinking about ourselves and the world around us that cause us needless suffering). When these challenges become too great and leave us feeling afraid, angry, confused or overwhelmed, therapy can be helpful. In my work with clients I strive to instill hope, foster resiliency, and nurture a sense of empowerment and personal agency.

As a couples therapist, I believe we all long for connection. It is primal and in our DNA. However, in order to feel a connection, we need to feel a sense of safety first. I am passionate about working with couples who are experiencing a lack of connection and are seeking help with hopes of increasing the effectiveness of their communication, boundaries, and connection. Another passion of mine is helping couples navigate family conflicts. Family conflicts are not easy and they tend to disrupt the whole family system. I am currently accepting new clients for couples or family therapy. I offer sliding scale fees for couples as well.

Have you had a recent change in your life and want a safe person to talk with to better understand yourself? Perhaps your feelings have felt more intense: anxiety, depression, confusion, or desire to find purpose to your life. You look around - seeking answers, understanding, & deeper healing. Maybe a life situation unfolded and you were suddenly on a path you never imagined (job loss, divorce, etc) or one you wanted to be on but it’s more stressful or different than what you thought (attending college or a new job). If this is you, I can support you. I approach all my clients with the understanding that we are capable of change.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
