I have experience with trauma, sever mental illness and life transitions. I work at my client's pace and follow the road they take in therapy. My approach is to give gentle guidance, educate, and creatively blend a holistic trauma-informed stance, which is the best success for healing. The creative process, through visual art and storytelling, opens up the unconscious mind, cleansing emotional pain while giving a common universal language. I explore with the client many curiosities of the human condition. Helping to connect the behaviors that motivate us to balance our individual strengths and inherit capacity for good social interest.

Many people often feel disconnected or experienced a recent loss or change. I enjoy assisting clients in getting to know themselves better. Other times, Brief counseling (8 sessions or less) can be just as rewarding. It depends on what you are looking for, which is not set in stone! Relationships are hard, therapy is the real safe space to dig deep, evaluate, address the not-so-fun things that brings discomfort or that have been avoided. Therapy is a journey. Each experience is valuable in the big picture.

Many of my clients identify as "people pleasers", and say they feel stuck in a difficult relationship with their family or partner. They may struggle setting boundaries and have a history of abandoning themselves in order to "keep the peace" with others. Some grew up in erratic or dysfunctional families where "walking on eggshells" was common and familiar. As adults, they have learned to tolerate dysfunction and may subconsciously select partners who are similarly invalidating, defensive, critical or otherwise difficult to please. As a result, these inner child wounds now show up in their adult relationships.

Therapy shouldn't be neutral towards oppression. Welcome to the world of anti-oppressive, anti-capitalist, trans-celebratory feminist psychotherapy! My name is Emma (she/her), and I am a Neurodivergent therapist who helps folx treat their OCD and manage their ADHD (two things that I also have!). My therapeutic approach is systems-informed, casual, and Neurodivergence-affirming (which means my clients and I color, crochet, and otherwise mindlessly fidget during sessions). I am professionally trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and use psychoeducation in all areas of my practice.

We never stop growing and evolving as people, but sometimes we all need help knowing the best way to move forward. I believe that one of the most important aspects of our evolution is to learn how to be in relationship with ourselves and those around us. Consequently, my therapeutic perspective is deeply based in thinking about the systems and context that my clients are in currently, as well as those that they have come from, and that shape their experiences. I am committed to supporting individuals, couples, and families in this process, and in learning more about themselves.

Life is hard. That’s pretty clear. But it’s made all the more difficult for those who are autistic, carry trauma, or are within the LGBTQIA+ community. The difficulty is unique. Whether it’s having an invisible disability, not being able to trust others, or fighting for acceptance, the ability to navigate life can be challenging. There’s hope. And I can help. Together we will work through the stories you’ve been taught, the expectations you’ve had to meet, and the experiences that brought you further and further from yourself.

Because I believe we grow and learn throughout our life, I delight in working with all people. I see therapy as a supportive environment created for the purpose of encouraging one another in times of need, as well as joy. I have specialized experience working with children and families, empowering each during tough transitions such as toddlerhood and adolescence, while collaborating during unexpected and challenging issues like ADHD, anxiety, depression, abuse, trauma and more. I utilize play, narrative, feminist, and mindfulness therapies to encourage hope and develop authentic connections with each person I see.

I'm currently accepting new clients and have immediate openings. My ideal client is someone who is ready to collaborate on meeting their goals! As the therapist, I'm not the 'leader' or 'expert' — I'm a co-pilot or a gentle guide in a client's therapy experience. If something isn't working (or even better, if something is!) I appreciate an open dialogue and willingness to try something different/new.

We will work together to figure out how move through current and past challenges more effectively so that hope and ease become a part of everyday life.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
