I have been an art psychotherapist since 1982. I currently work with adolescents and adults, using a trauma informed integrated approach for the impact of developmental trauma with its comorbidity, dissociation, and attachment issues. Art gives voice to what is stored implicitly within sensory somatic means. My client and I foster the relational benefit of the compassionate therapeutic alliance using the power of the creative process with a strength based focus. Our collaborative goal is to resolve the impact of the past; building resiliency, internal wisdom, and self compassion leading to a stronger sense of Self.

I help individuals become aware of this connection, bringing attention to somatic clues that provide information to aid in the therapeutic process.
I begin therapy by building a strong relationship with my clients. It is my goal that you feel safe and cared for when we are together, and I do my best to step into your experience with you and feel what you are feeling. Clients find me nurturing and have confidence that I am helping them reach their goals. I enjoy working with couples, children, and individuals. With couples, I help uncover destructive relationship patterns and establish new patterns that bring healing, and mutual satisfaction. With children, I provide play therapy and work as a team with their parents and caregivers to reach their goals.

Life gives us challenges- often unexpectedly. When that happens we can feel overwhelmed, sad, anxious, angry, lost, or frustrated. We can struggle with the next steps of how to start feeling better. All challenges hold within them opportunities and I'd like to help you as you discover them. I am skilled in helping my clients meet the goals they set. Together, let's figure out how to cope with what is occurring, better understand yourself in the midst of it, develop deeper strengths, learn new skills, and make the choices that feel best for you. Big changes and big challenges can make us feel alone, but you aren't.

Over the last 20 years, I have worked with children, adolescents & adults in a variety of settings. I recognize that in order to effectively work with anyone of any age you have to engage the client where they are at. I realize that it is important to understand culture, upbringing, parenting styles, essentially the world that the client lives in, in order to truly be empathetic to a person's issues and life challenges.

I believe therapy is a collaborative process and my highest priority is creating a safe space for clients to share and process things that aren't easy to deal with on their own or in the "real world". I support clients in utilizing their own inner strengths and resources to deal with the difficulties inherent in being a human being. I've worked in the mental health and substance abuse fields for over 10 years and also have a substantial amount of my own personal experience in healing and recovery work to offer to my clients.

You just finished a productive day at work and felt pretty good about yourself. Then that voice pipes up. “Remember you can’t do anything right” “Everyone is judging you behind your back?” “You try so hard but always mess up.” “You can’t win.” No matter what you do, this inner critic never stops. Every time your confidence starts to grow, and you consider trying something new, that voice returns to fill you with fear and doubt. It seems like you only know how to focus on the bad and never give yourself any credit for the good. You wish you could somehow silence this part of you, but it feels hopeless. You don’t know what to do.

The “Mind-Body” connection is important in growth and healing, so as a therapist I strive to make each therapy session as engaging and interactive as possible. In addition to “talk” therapy, we might incorporate art, movement, role play, nature, or music into the session. I am also trained in EMDR so we can work on past big or little traumas to help you live and thrive in the present. The goal is for you to become your truest and best self always and in all ways by helping you gain new insight into yourself and your life through creative and experiential counseling techniques.

“In every adult there lurks a child— an eternal child, something that is always becoming, is never completed, and calls for unceasing care, attention, and education. That is the part of the personality which wants to develop and become whole.“ -Carl Jung.

Finding the right therapist can be a great investment in your self growth and healing. I believe that everyone is deserving of support - my goal is to hold a non-judgmental and compassionate space for you to identify and work toward your goals. I am a queer-identified clinical social worker who practices from an anti-oppressive, intersectional feminist lens. I work with adults (18 and over) and specialize in supporting those who have experienced trauma, attachment wounding, anxiety, substance use, dissociation, and dissociative disorders.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
