It takes courage to seek the help of a therapist. My primary concern when I first meet a client is to respond with empathy and sensitivity to the distress which brings you to my office. In an atmosphere of genuine safety and acceptance we can begin the process of collaborating to understand and resolve your concerns. I draw on a number of theoretical perspectives and more than 20 years of clinical experience to provide therapy that is as effective as possible, in a compassionate, confidential and comfortable setting.

Welcome to a space dedicated to you: your thoughts, your desires, your challenges, your growth. In a world that wants to pull us in a million directions every day, we need a time and place to focus on ourselves and our priorities. I love working with adults who are feeling overwhelmed by demands, anxious about the unknown, torn by decisions, and uprooted by life changes. I strive to create a safe, compassionate space where we can explore together who you are, who you want to be, and how you can overcome the things that are getting in your way.

Amy helps you to find the insight you need so your story can make sense again. We can all become unsure of how we got to where we are, where we are headed, and even what would make things better. We become emotionally, relationally, and even physically stuck, reacting in ways that are ineffective at best, and often just plain counterproductive. Amy brings to therapy a number of different approaches to assist you in finding personal insight, motivation, and connection. She supports clients in the act of turning to their internal experience as a guide to forming connections, making decisions, moving through difficult experiences.

Seeking help in therapy takes strength and bravery, and I applaud clients for taking the first steps. It's easy to be hard on ourselves about how we feel or how we respond to our experiences. Sometimes we feel stuck, individually or in our relationships, and it can be hard to see a new path. I'm passionate about helping clients reach their potential to grow, change the patterns that no longer serve them, and move past the obstacles in their way. I work with clients to process and heal, create greater connections in their relationships, communicate more effectively, create healthy boundaries, and move through life more confidently.

My therapy style is based on three principles: Awareness, Discovery, and Integration. I approach my clients holistically. My intention is to explore their troubles without judgment or a specific agenda. I believe that the problem always contains the seeds of its own resolution, and I trust my clients to know what is ultimately best for them. My clients do well in therapy when they practice curiosity, patience, and friendliness towards their own troubles. Over the years I have tended to focus on mood disorders, anxiety disorders, addictions, trauma, and relationship issues.

A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because their trust is not on the branch but their ability to fly. -Author Unknown. There will be times the branch breaks out from underneath you: anxiety, depression, addiction, ruminative thoughts, grief, trauma, loss of relationships, or loss of enjoyment of life. These can make one feel as though they are in a free fall. Psychotherapy can help. Mindfulness and DBT skills can help you believe in yourself and restore trust in your ability to fly.

I don't know how to stop hurting. I don't know how to help him. I don't know how to get anything to change. Whether it is a problem you are experiencing with yourself, your child or another loved one many people have these thoughts. When the thoughts become overwhelming and impact your quality of life, it is time to change. Anais Nin wrote, "And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."

Therapy is a collaborative human endeavor, joining you in your journey towards wholeness, healing, liberation, and transformation. I emphasize collaboration because it illuminates the heart of therapy and life, where relationality is foundational. As a holistic therapist, I understand that well-being hinges on our relationships with ourselves, others, and nature. Symptoms like anxiety, depression, and stress signal ruptured relationships, manifesting in unhealthy patterns of thoughts, behaviors and emotions. Let's embark on self-discovery to uncover and replace these patterns, moving from discord to harmony and fulfillment together

Our focus is to help individuals and couples discover what repetitive patterns they continue to do, and whether or not those patterns benefit them any more. Early interactions influence how we perceive relationships, ourselves, how we interact and interpret other people verbal and nonverbal communication. These early interactions or attachment styles teach us about what is "normal" expected, safe, unsafe, our value, morals, and more. My goal is to help you create healthy relationships with yourself, and the people in your life.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
