Hello! My name is Alicia Luke, LCSW. I am so happy you are here! I honestly feel that "just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone." – Lisa Olivera. I utilize therapy interventions based on an individual's needs and presenting concerns, meeting you where you are at in your life. I believe it is important to understand one's environment and how a person perceives and interacts within it. My intent is to create a safe space for each client to feel heard, supported, and validated.

I believe as human beings we all need to feel a sense of hope and we all deserve support during challenging or stressful times. Selecting a therapist can feel overwhelming when we are struggling or feel lost. My approach is to meet you where you are, work together to determine what best meets your needs, and to collaboratively create a plan that helps you achieve your goals.

I understand that making the phone call to see a therapist can be a difficult task. I treat each person with care, compassion, and integrity. When I speak with you on the phone for the first time my main goal is to put you at ease and to empower you to continue to move forward giving you support when needed. Life offers so many challenges to us and sometimes we just need a little extra kindness and support from a therapist to move forward and live the life that we know was meant for us and our future.

The decision to seek help from a mental health professional is not an easy one. If you've never been in therapy before, you likely have no idea what to expect, and you may worry that you'll be judged, criticized, or labeled as "crazy." If you have been to therapy before, the thought of "starting all over" with someone new can also be overwhelming, especially if your previous experiences haven't been very helpful. Whether you're a therapy veteran or a newbie, I believe I can help.

Life gets messy and complicated. Struggling with the work/life/family balance can be managed by acknowledging the challenge and talking about it. Most clients struggle with some type of anxiety or depression. In the session, we start by working toward developing a coping skill "toolbox" and learning how to recognize when those symptoms start. Most clients want to feel heard and want to have strategies to use to help manage their symptoms. I also find that most clients want a person to listen, someone who is impartial, who can challenge but offer a perspective.

Choosing a therapist that you connect with is often the most important aspect to successful therapy. It can be daunting to find the right fit and scary to expose yourself. To foster our therapeutic relationship, I will strive to create a relaxed space to explore your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and experiences. The core of my relational style is authentic and warm, and I will adapt to your personality and pace, so you feel supported rather than pushed. I seek to assist individuals and couples in achieving deeper, more fulfilled and satisfied relationships and connections with both themselves and the people around them.

Solution Focused Brief (SFBT) Therapists

How does solution-focused therapy work?

The treatment works by helping a client notice which behaviors and thoughts have positive results on their lives and building a plan around how to maximise these strengths. Practitioners of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) believe that individuals already have the experience, wisdom, and resilience to create change in their lives, but may need a guide to help them realise which changes to make and how to make them.

Is solution-focused brief therapy evidence-based?

Yes. Solution-focused brief therapy has been extensively studied, and researchers find strong evidence that it’s an effective treatment for many behavioral and psychological concerns. This may be due to the uplifting nature and practicality of the treatment, which allows patients to employ strategies to reach their goals that are incremental and achievable.

How long does solution-focused brief therapy last?

Solution-focused brief therapy, as the name implies, is brief. The timeline may vary from person to person, given the challenges they face and their situation in life, but treatment is typically complete within four to eight sessions. This therapy type is a pragmatic one: it’s concerned more with “how” problems can be addressed and improved than getting to the root of “why” they exist in the first place.

Is solution-focused brief therapy a type of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Solution-focused brief therapy is related to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)in that both are pragmatic approaches that deal less with gaining a full understanding of the cause of a mental health problem and more with creating plans for how to cope with these problems and improve an individual’s day-to-day life. They are distinct, however, in that SFBT emphasises building on strengths and resources, while CBT focuses on changing negative thoughts and behaviors.
