At the Marriage Resource Center we know what makes marriage work. We focus on solutions instead of problems and build on what is right instead of analyzing what is wrong. I have over 20 years of counseling experience using research based principles that will help you rediscover joy in your marriage. Spouse won't come? These principles can be effective even when your spouse does not want to change. Starting in the first session we begin to develop a plan for positive changes.

As an avid runner, I believe there is a strong connection between the mind and body and I try to incorporate a holistic approach in therapy. Whether it is offering nutritional suggestions on foods that help alleviate depressive symptoms, or helping you identify a form of exercise that helps you alleviate your stress and anxiety, I look at you as a ‘whole person’ rather than a collection of symptoms.

We all face times when life's challenges overwhelm our coping resources. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, career, family, or health issues, giving yourself space to sort through your feelings in a safe place can help build resilience and coping. At my practice, I offer solution focused therapeutic interventions with a wide array of therapies and ideologies that are tailored to the needs of my individual client's and their goals.
People that are looking for professional mental health services come from all ethnicities, backgrounds, and walks of life. Some are in the twilight of their lives, while others are just getting started. Some need help with delicate relationship struggles, while others may find that they are searching for a diagnosis to help them finally make sense of things. Then there are those that are just looking for someone to talk to about what is going on in their lives. What you need to remember though, is that no matter what you are looking to get help with, you are not alone. The first step can be the hardest, but here you are!

Do you often feel powerless and overwhelmed with the stressors of everyday life? Suppose you are having trouble adjusting to the changes around you and maintaining relationships, or you feel that things are not working for you. In that case, you have arrived at the right place. Therapy is a collaborative effort; therefore, I believe that my clients are the experts, and you can think of me as your copilot. I believe that people develop their reality based on past experiences (negative or positive) that then shape how we perceive and make sense of the world around us.

My name is Susie Wilhelm and I am an LCSW located in Illinois. My approach to therapy is warm, empathetic, non-judgmental, and client-centered. I believe in the process of building rapport and trust during the beginning phases of therapy so that my clients feel comfortable before sharing their concerns or struggles. I let my clients take the lead during our sessions, and I take an empathetic and non-judgmental stance while I listen and support. I commonly use therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT).

Solution Focused Brief (SFBT) Therapists

How does solution-focused therapy work?

The treatment works by helping a client notice which behaviors and thoughts have positive results on their lives and building a plan around how to maximise these strengths. Practitioners of solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) believe that individuals already have the experience, wisdom, and resilience to create change in their lives, but may need a guide to help them realise which changes to make and how to make them.

Is solution-focused brief therapy evidence-based?

Yes. Solution-focused brief therapy has been extensively studied, and researchers find strong evidence that it’s an effective treatment for many behavioral and psychological concerns. This may be due to the uplifting nature and practicality of the treatment, which allows patients to employ strategies to reach their goals that are incremental and achievable.

How long does solution-focused brief therapy last?

Solution-focused brief therapy, as the name implies, is brief. The timeline may vary from person to person, given the challenges they face and their situation in life, but treatment is typically complete within four to eight sessions. This therapy type is a pragmatic one: it’s concerned more with “how” problems can be addressed and improved than getting to the root of “why” they exist in the first place.

Is solution-focused brief therapy a type of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Solution-focused brief therapy is related to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)in that both are pragmatic approaches that deal less with gaining a full understanding of the cause of a mental health problem and more with creating plans for how to cope with these problems and improve an individual’s day-to-day life. They are distinct, however, in that SFBT emphasises building on strengths and resources, while CBT focuses on changing negative thoughts and behaviors.
