All psychological issues are ultimately existential in origin, entailing a confrontation with death, loss, meaning, purpose and value. All that we do (knowingly or unknowingly) is dedicated to deciphering these daunting and irrepressible demands of existence. Few are successful in resolving or even clearly conceptualizing these existential issues and their minds inevitably descend into despair, depression and anxiety. Some seek to assuage their suffering with psychoactive substances (illicit and licit) and this leads only to addiction and abdication of autonomy over one's authentic self. My System offers a solution.

My philosophy is we each have what we need inside us to heal, grow, and enact change, but sometimes we can struggle to tap into that. My goal is to support and assist you on your journey to achieving your goals and to being your best possible self. My second goal is to provide a comfortable and collaborative atmosphere where trust can be built for change to happen.

When people come for therapy, they are feeling uncomfortable. Usually, they are experiencing feelings such as depression, anxiety, or anger. The source of those feelings lies in how they think about themselves or in how they cope with problems in their lives. So, change involves learning new thoughts and behavior. People need to learn self-enhancing ways to think about themselves and what happens to them. They need to change their behavior in order to better meet the challenges of life.

Welcome! Typically, I work with clients who are struggling with traditional behavioral health concerns such as anxiety, depression/grief, stress, relationship concerns & life transitions. As a trained health psychologist, I also work with clients who are struggling with issues such as sleep disturbance, high blood pressure/cholesterol, migraine/tension headaches, pain & newly diagnosed illness. For some, there is an intersection between physical & emotional health. When this is the case, I welcome collaboration with any treating specialists. I find that clients are best served when providers work together for your benefit.

I am specifically trained to use CBT-I to improve sleep and treat Insomnia.
Overwhelmed with anxiety? Frustrated with negative thinking or persistent depression? Maybe you are stuck with sleeping or eating habits that don’t seem to change despite your best attempts. Effective therapy should help you understand exactly why these symptoms exist (likely a very valid reason!) and help you identify a different course of action that is in alignment with the way you want to live. My goal for treatment is to meaningfully reduce the impact of symptoms rather than just learn better ways to “cope” with distress. Although results-oriented, I value being compassionate, encouraging, genuine and non-judgmental.

I work with clients ages 18 and older who experience anxiety, adjustment challenges, acute stress, and grief. I have also gained experience in an integrated medical setting, treating patients with co-morbid physical and mental health concerns, helping them with things like medication adherence, smoking cessation, and sleep disturbances. I offer brief therapy for specific concerns or I can work with you on a more ongoing basis as well, depending on the need.

I specialize in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders as well as life adjustment issues. I am also certified in clinical hypnosis to treat weight loss, smoking, sleep, confidence, and pain management. I have over 20 years of experience as a therapist in the mental health field. Although I have much experience and knowledge as a therapist, I believe people won't care how much you know until they know how much you care. We all need to be seen, heard, and understood, and so much healing happens then. I believe in the mind/body/spirit connection and I individualize my approach with each unique person.

Chronic insomnia is a common issue, with many people struggling with their sleep for years. Symptoms consist of trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early, resulting in fatigue or sleepiness during the day. Perhaps you have tried other approaches, such as medications, but are not getting the results you need. Fortunately there is drug-free approach to treating insomnia that is brief, highly effective and enduring, and aims to resolve the underlying issues that maintain chronic insomnia.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
