I have training in treatments to target PTSD, depression, anxiety disorders, general and relationship stress/life transitions and insomnia.
Everyone experiences challenges to varying degrees in their lives, and it takes strength and sometimes trying different strategies to manage them effectively. Therapy can offer a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to work through the difficulties of life. As a Clinical Psychologist I work to help identify the elements contributing to your suffering and then provide tools and strategies to help overcome that suffering. I aim to help you to move forward in your life in the direction of your choosing. I provide services via Telehealth (Zoom) during this time in Washington, Tennessee, Florida, and all 39 PsyPact participating states.

I offer psychoanalysis/psychoanalytic therapy for overcoming anxiety, depression and emotional difficulties at all phases of life. For many, a starting place in therapy may be describing concrete symptoms of pain and illness in your body, and/or life stressors such as finances, bills, piles of mail and household clutter. Addressing money stress, and beliefs about money in therapy can be transformative. Braving to ask for help with panic attacks and insomnia, chronic pain, disease/chronic conditions is also transformative. These topical, real-world struggles are important entry points to your emotional world and your inner life.

I strongly believe that everyone can access their own wisdom and knowledge, even if negative emotions like stress and anxiety make it difficult. We all need to develop skills to improve our lives. Let's collaborate to enhance self-care in different aspects of your daily routine, including nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep. My aim is to teach you mindful techniques that can diminish the need for unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as stress eating or engaging in activities that cause you to feel ashamed.

I work with clients experiencing anxiety and depression, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and issues around identity, including sexuality and gender issues. I also work with clients who are grappling with existential issues of meaning and mortality. I focus on the cultivation of awareness and acceptance in the safe environment of a compassionate therapeutic relationship.

As human beings, we frequently subject ourselves to harsh self-judgment. While self-criticism has its merits on occasion, it often engenders emotional turmoil. Research into self-compassion has unveiled its extraordinary ability to diminish anxiety, depression, and stress while elevating motivation, confidence, and overall performance. Yet, the practical application of self-compassion is often more challenging than mere words suggest.

Many of us have learned to alter or set aside parts of ourselves. This can show up in negative self talk, unsatisfying relationships, overwhelmed nervous systems, chronic pain or illness, or reactions that feel out of control or not in alignment for us. Sometimes this comes from patterns in our families, trauma, or oppression. I welcome anyone who is seeking to reconnect with themselves and others.

People come to therapy for many reasons. When we are in pain, confusion, fear or sadness we seek support and understanding. Sometimes we are going through a difficult transition and just need someone to talk to. Other times, we have specific goals we would like to reach, or coping skills we would like to learn. The therapeutic process is a creative and compassionate practice that is based in the respect and safety of the relationship between the client and the therapist. Challenges are often opportunities for growth, and often lead us to a greater understanding of ourselves.

I wish to serve people of color and other marginalized groups who have experienced chronic oppression and injustices. I would love to work with individuals, couples and families who are ready to step into their power and reclaim their voice. I wish to serve those who are in need of healing and need assistance processing grief, loss, frustration and exhaustion from life's trials and adversities. Being a person of color poses many challenges in this country and seeking help from professionals who look or talk nothing like you makes it far more difficult. I see you and I'm here for you.

Are you functional, even successful on the outside but deal with insecurities and worry that your problems are interfering with your work or relationships? You might have lingering impacts from things that happened in childhood or in toxic relationships. Most of my clients are women who are overthinkers and people- pleasers and suffer from being very self-critical. I think of our work as "recovery from everything." The positive coping skills we work on are quite similar no matter what has caused you such high levels of anxiety.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
