The brain is connected to ALL your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors AND can be changed! I provide counseling but also have over a decade of experience with Neurofeedback, a tool to help the communication code that occurs in the brain, rewire, and strengthen neuronal connections to lower anxiety, depression, and improve attention, sleep, and memory.
Counseling is not about getting advice. It's about processing what you have going on and figuring out how to take next steps in the places of life where you feel stuck, discouraged, sad, or lost. Counseling is about having someone there with you to help you sort things out, support you, and even sometimes challenge you to move forward with your goals. I use brain-based research and easy-to-use tools to work with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, and age-related issues.

Beyond talk therapy. I believe that life should be meaningful and that the path from the head to the heart is the one that matters most. My goal is to help people connect to who they really are and feel good in their skin again. This requires making changes on a deep level. I am an active and directive therapist who will engage powerfully with you to help you make the oftentimes radical changes you seek. No more bandaids! I am a frequent teacher through TCU's extended adult education programs, as well as a speaker, group and retreat leader.

I love being a counselor-helping clients make changes that fit their lives. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, difficulties at home, life transitions: having the support of a counselor who can magnify your strengths, draw on what is working in your life and bring these skills and attributes to find solutions to what is not working well in your life right now--that is very empowering. I believe in relationship building, supporting the client as they examine the changes they feel will improve their life. Making the changes the client wants to make is vital.

You wake up worried about the day ahead before you even get out of bed. At work, you're scared of making mistakes, it feels like everyone's waiting for you to mess up. When friends invite you out, you say “yes” but inside, you're nervous about going. At home, instead of relaxing, you keep thinking about awkward things you said or did, wondering what kind of impression you left on everyone. It feels like your brain won't turn off these thoughts that make you feel not good enough, and it's exhausting. These anxious thoughts are undercutting your confidence and affecting both your professional and personal relationships.

Knowing from an early age that I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level, a career in counseling became a must. I was born and grew up in Belgium and moved to the states as a pre-teen, which was a tough transition at times. I quickly discovered my love for connecting with others was no different on the other side of the world. This strengthened my belief that cultural background, race, sex, age, etc does not make a difference in our suffering but that there is hope for each one of us.

Spend time with your people and feel a deep sense of connection. Learn to set healthy limits and ask for what you need. Have the confidence and calm to face your fears and treat yourself with radical self-love. Allow me to create a safe and sacred space for your beautiful brain to heal. Therapy is not a one-fits-all approach and should tailor toward the individual, I, therefore, use a variety of therapies; Cognitive-behavioral therapy, person-centered solution-focused, client-centered, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, motivational interviewing. Often life struggles leave us feeling overwhelmed and hopeless making us feel out of control of our wellbeing. It is my greatest passion to aid my clients in instilling that hope through empowerment, education and guidance I believe that everyone has the ability to find inner peace and strength to overcome these obstacles.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
