My name is Shelby Nielson, and I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. The approach that I take in therapy is to look at my clients from a strengths-based perspective. My focus is to work with people and enable them to be able to find the best versions of themselves. The first step I take in therapy is to engage a client from a person-centered approach to enable a strong therapeutic relationship. In building this kind of rapport with individuals we then can explore the effective theoretical approaches and techniques that can work for them.
As a therapeutic provider, I strive to engage in active listening and follow up by asking clarifying questions to enable clients to be able to communicate struggles and needs. Clients can benefit from feeling comfort in the therapeutic environment and should feel heard and seen.
here are times where we all need to face our own maladaptive coping strategies and issues and those can be hard to hear. As a therapist, I strive to help clients face these in a respectful manner, allowing time to process what they experience while finding healthy coping skills.
