Greetings! It would be an honor to join you on this journey of discovery, transformation, and healing. I am a tender-hearted, queer, white, able-bodied, person who was born and raised in Oregon. I am primarily trained and practiced in Harm Reduction Psychotherapy—a perspective where I am devoted to meeting you exactly where you are at and keeping compassion central to our work together. My lens prioritizes non-pathologizing trauma-informed anti-oppressive practice with attunement to systemic oppressions and violences that impact the individual within a complicated ecosystem.

Hi! My name is Leslie Gellert. The way that I see therapy as an opportunity to identify what your challenges are, what your strengths are and ultimately where you see yourself. Human beings are inherently resilient and I am excited about helping the people I work with make changes in their lives that lead to balance and connection. I specialize in working with kids, adolescents and perinatal clients. My theoretical orientation is based on interventions from cognitive-behavioral therapy, ACT, solution-focused therapy, collaborative problem solving and motivational interviewing. I look forward to meeting you!

I believe that human connection begins with exploring our own vulnerabilities. My human experience has led me to process moments of disappointment and pain. I experienced challenges and I experienced successes. Everything from difficult breakups to investing in healthy relationships. I continue to learn and transform from all of this because life has its ebbs and flows which I use to find inner balance.

For some of us life can bring some pretty significant challenges, stressors or transitions that just have "you stuck" in unproductive patterns in relationships, work, school or just life in general. You yearn for release-freedom from these unproductive repetitions; but where to turn? It takes courage to seek help and the task of finding the right person can be overwhelming. The thought of talking to someone who does not understand your cultural lens makes therapy seem "hardly worth the effort". UNFORTUNATELY NO LONGER EXCEPTING CLIENTS AT THIS TIME.

We all have moments when we react to situations and make things worse rather than better. Where we end up nurturing our anger or hurt, rather then finding a path to repair. At those times we need to be guided towards a new set of responses and learn to stop those automatic responses, which are adaptive patterns from the past and no longer work in the present. The change begins with believing in our own self worth as a constant, rather than acquired from outside ourselves. This work allows us to develop relational integrity and build human connections that are strong, lasting and healthy.

I provide therapeutic support for individual adults, children, and families around significant life transitions. Being human means that we experience transition and change. Some changes are expected and slower in nature. Some are abrupt and traumatic. Through my calm presence, strong support, and our therapeutic relationship, I can help you move through these transitions, and gain insight, healing, and change. I offer a nonjudgmental space where we can explore together sources of your pain or distress, while developing new ways of interacting with your self and others. I offer empathy, experience, and expertise to help you heal.

Hi there! I know that finding the right therapist can be challenging, especially when things may already feel overwhelming and you're doing your best to keep your head above water. Life gets busy, relationships get strained, and it can be tough to juggle all of the different hats you wear. I believe that everyone has strengths and my goal is to empower clients to work through barriers that may lead them to be feeling stuck. I take a holistic, client-centered, directive approach with individuals and couples. I show up in sessions as my genuine self and hope to create an environment where my clients feel safe to do the same.

Hello! My guess is that you're currently feeling a bit overwhelmed and possibly frustrated by the task of finding a therapist who both resonates with you and, is available. Being overwhelmed by the complexity of our lives, by our relationships, our work-lives and by the financial pressures we sometimes face seems to have become the "new normal" for many of us. Helping clients better manage these challenges while finding new solutions in an open-minded, comfortable and at times humorous environment is at the core of my practice. I enjoy working with youth, adults and couples seeking helpful new life-skills and big picture clarity.

I want you to know that I see you. You’re struggling, feeling lost or down, or finding yourself dealing with trauma, which makes you anxious, jumpy, and often triggered in your everyday life. Maybe you are feeling stressed and take care of others while putting yourself on the back burner, or have lost touch with the wise nurturing part of yourself. But things can get better.

Counseling for self-esteem, anxiety, trauma, depression, and life stressors. I support clients wanting to change persistent feelings of not being good enough, heal from their past, and build more connection, joy, and fulfillment in life. Many of my clients want to understand patterns they feel stuck in, build a secure relationship with self and others, relate to their thoughts differently, regulate and sit with emotions, express their needs, and slow down a restless mind and body. Clients that have been most successful with me tend to be goal-oriented and are accepting of their role in their personal growth.

From struggling to THRIVING. Become more fully "yourself." Enjoy relationship satisfaction. Strengthen connection to something bigger that is meaningful. Get relief from depression and anxiety (really!). Improve effectiveness at work. Feel more at home in your body, content. Mindful and present. LAUGH. Choosing a therapist that is both really good AND a great fit is important. There is a difference here you will experience from the get go. The office is in a 1930's Cape Cod style house...inviting & comfortable. With warmth and character. David is unusually relational and "real." Sessions are 60, 75 or 90 minutes rather than 50.

Do you worry constantly, have a persistent fear of failure or judgement and feel on edge with just about anything? Feeling like you’re not good enough, not living the life you want to live, or that you’ve lost touch with the things that bring you happiness? Have you had a traumatic experience that left you feeling disconnected and having a hard time trusting people, with the need to protect and numb yourself? These things can impact our physical and mental wellbeing, keep us up at night, make us feel disconnected from the people closest to us and reduce our ability to achieve what we want in life.

I work with clients to offer serious relief from the effects of trauma, depression and anxiety on their lives. Tools like EMDR and Internal Family Systems, as well the creation of a judgement-free space to talk can bring hope to the stuck parts of our worlds, and finally allow us to be present in our own lives again. Finding relief can feel like taking a first deep breath after being underwater for a long time, and that's an outcome worth fighting together for. Please email to learn more and find our if we make a good therapy team.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Portland?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
