I specialize in walking with individual's who are struggling with pornography addiction or other forms of unwanted sexual behavior. I also walk with individuals who have experienced the horrors of sexual, physical, emotional or spiritual abuse and the stress that often follows. And I have a heart for journeying with individual's who are grieving and those who are struggling with questions of identity and spirituality.

I like to create for my clients an environment that is conducive to cultivating open communication and trust. I respect and value the thoughts and feelings of my clients and each individual is treated as their own person, tried by challenges specific to themselves. Through self-exploration, understanding and deepened insight, I believe that individuals can heal and foster change.

Life can be difficult at times and often we struggle to navigate those challenging times. Marriage and trauma difficulties, in particular, can be very personal and often leave us feeling extremely confused and lonely. As a therapist I use the Gottman Method Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy to assist couples. I work with my clients to identify a specific cycle of conflict, identify and express personal longings, increase level of intimacy, and put trust/commitment back into relationships. I also use EMDR, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to explore, educate and empower those with trauma and each person I come in contact with.

Unhelpful thoughts, unwise choices, honest mistakes, unforeseen change, traumatic pasts… Life will include very difficult circumstances. You may question your ability to change, lack clarity about which direction to go, and doubt whether you deserve something better. Men and women, individuals and couples, have worked with me to: 1) change their understanding of who they are, 2) achieve freedom from unhealthy sexual desires and behaviors, 3) develop a plan to build the life they want, 4) gain clarity about what they want, and 5) repair or reinvigorate their marriage.

All of our stories are different. We have parts of our stories that are bright and beautiful, but we also have parts of our stories that are dark and painful. We may not have been able to control the things that have happened in our story but we can control how we respond and how we move forward. We all struggle to navigate through this life. By the time I was 24, I had been diagnosed with OCD, PTSD, depression, anxiety disorder & panic disorder. I intimately know the affliction of mental health struggles. After years of lived personal experience with trauma & a myriad of diagnoses; a two decades long healing journey involving seeing over 50 different practitioners and tens of thousands of dollars; countless hours of training; and 2 master's degrees, I have honed an approach to therapy that weaves ancient wisdom, contemporary neuroscience, and compassionate inquiry into a tapestry of healing. People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

In order to get the most out of therapy there needs to be clear, defined goals that are built out of trust between the client and the therapist. What do you want out of therapy and why? After a period of time your goals and needs as a client can change based on the progress made throughout therapy. I believe a good therapist will, "work themselves out of a job". This means that we will work towards self-sufficiency where you don't need therapy and you are the best version of yourself, no matter how long it takes. For some it might be a few sessions, and for others it might take much longer. Therapy is based on your needs!

John Tuttle graduated from Western Michigan University with a Master of the Arts degree. John is licensed in the State of Michigan as a clinical mental health counselor. At his most recent placement he diagnosed and treated patients with various disorders and worked with clients desiring help with relationship issues, difficult circumstances, and life stage adjustments. He currently owns and is the primary therapist at Lakeshore Guidance, LLC. John also holds a Master of Education degree from Grand Valley State University and has worked in elementary and middle schools on anti-bullying programs and crisis response intervention.
