I also have experience in working with people in recovery, trauma/PTSD, codependency, religious trauma and survivors of sexual abuse/assault.
I work to create a whole-brain and body approach to healing for each individual client through the use of EMDR. I promote seeking balance in life and advocate to help people feel emotionally and mentally empowered. I also take a trauma-informed approach in helping others better understand themselves, their behavior and how this has impacted their life. It is important to me to meet people where they are in seeking change and healing, because I believe this allows people to experience the power of freedom and choice in improving the overall quality of their life.

The core of my counseling approach is to provide an environment that is comfortable, judgment free, and prioritizes your mental health. I don’t believe in trying to “fix people”, rather support their journey alongside them. My office is a place to explore life’s ups and down, discuss coping skills that resonate with you, and a place where we can grow with each other. There is no “one size fits all” in counseling so getting to know you; your interest, your learning style, your strengths, helps me pull from therapeutic theories and techniques to best fit your needs and goals.

Are you feeling disconnected ? Feeling stuck? Overwhelmed? Sometimes our experiences and circumstances leave us struggling to get through the day to day. Or, maybe you are managing, but you're left feeling depleted and exhausted. Whether you are managing a mental health diagnosis, experiencing a difficult life transition, or struggling with unhelpful self-talk, it can take a toll. I believe all people inherently possess the capacity to make life- enriching, meaningful change. Sometimes, we just need extra support to sort through all that life might throw at us in order to make those changes.

I believe nothing is “wrong” with a person who experiences pain or suffering, or who isn't positive all of the time, because pain is a normal part of being human. I practice a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients learn how to experience difficult thoughts and emotions without suppressing them, in order to make values-based decisions. I believe you can build a fulfilling life no matter what has happened to you. I additionally practice EMDR to help individuals safely reprocess traumatic experiences. I am an EMDR Certified Therapist.

The longest journey begins with a single step and I am grateful to walk that path with you. It can be frightening and intimidating to begin the process of therapy; however, that experience can help you to make the changes that lead to a happier and more fulfilled life. Through a collaborative and safe relationship I establish with my clients, progress and change is made. Areas of practice include mood disorders, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, men's concerns, and ADHD and cognitive functioning (including testing services). I also enjoy working with clients from adolescents to seniors.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
