Do you find it difficult to make and keep relationships? Do you give and give in hope others will give back to you? Do your thoughts and emotions stop you from moving forward? Does any of this cause you to spend more time alone or cloud your judgement?

A wonderful person once said to me, “we are on this journey together. So I will believe in you and have hope for you on the days you cannot have it for yourself.” I have carried these words with me into my therapeutic ideals. These words speak to my beliefs about what therapy should be; a journey I take, as a guardian, with my clients, as unique individuals. There are so many reasons to begin your journey. So many reasons to heal. And each of those reasons, no matter what they are, no matter if you aren’t even really aware of what they are yet, are valid.

Your past and your present do not have to define your future. Instead, it can be used to propel you forward and help you to become the person that you want to be. Many of my clients enter therapy feeling trapped, stuck, or weighed down by life circumstances. It doesn't have to be this way. I am equipped to work with clients on a variety of issues, but my specialty is working with individuals who have experienced trauma or issues related to attachment (physically and/or emotionally absent parent, adoption, or foster care).

I am here for those of you feeling lost, overwhelmed, defeated, or unsure how to move forward. Maybe you're feeling anxious or depressed and you've lost touch with the part of you that felt joy or purpose in life. Maybe you’ve experienced a traumatic event and need help processing this and moving forward. Or maybe you're experiencing some big life transitions and you don't feel emotionally prepared to handle them. These are all common human experiences that are worthy of confronting and working through to find peace and satisfaction.

With over 16 years experience as a licensed therapist, I'm passionate about building rapport and, from this basis, providing high-quality treatment. In working with couples, I maintain a good therapeutic relationship with both clients and take a balanced approach where each partner is empowered to speak up and share in their progress. When working with anxious clients, I assist clients in defining what anxiety is and what it does so that they can recognize and challenge it as they develop new coping skills. In treating trauma, I help clients feel empowered to step into their work before starting Brainspotting or EMDR sessions.

Welcome! I’m a therapist based in the Carolinas that specializes in sex therapy. I often work with people with sexual concerns that impact their relationships, self esteem, or overall quality of life. I want you to know that if this is you, you are not alone. Sexual concerns can be some of the most challenging and sensitive issues to address, but I believe that they don't have to be a barrier to fulfilling relationships or personal satisfaction. I can help you navigate these complex issues with empathy and knowledge, all while offering a non-judgmental and affirming approach tailored to your needs.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
