It can be lonely and scary to navigate the darkness we feel after experiencing adversity, trauma, and issues with mental health. People who have experienced grief, loss, abuse, etc. often feel a sense of confusion and disconnection from their own identity. My intention as a therapist specializing in trauma is to meet you where you are and guide you safely through your unique healing journey. My office is a judgement free zone where you can unpack anything. Everybody deserves to find their way back to themselves, their light, their voice, and their wellness. It is an honor and a privilege to sit with you for this process.

Being a psychotherapist for the past 20 years has and continues to be a journey with people that validates my belief healing and deep change is truly possible. The therapeutic relationship which is a special and sacred connection is by far the most essential ingredient to real shifts in our attachment systems and long held unconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world. My background is mainly centered in Body/Mind experiential psychotherapy. I help people to slow down and bring mindful awareness to their experience. This allows us to study together what’s happening in the here and now.

My style is directive and conversational, and I work from the stance that people have the ability to heal from within, with external supports. By combining more traditional forms of therapy with artistic expression, my clients have consistently been able to discover and implement coping skills, establish positive thought patterns, and move beyond their challenges. I am certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and also practice cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), expressive therapies, and harm reduction methods.

When we change the way we think, we change the way we live. Perspective is key. I believe counseling is a space to explore the thoughts that hinder success and then transform them! Reshape the way we’ve learned to communicate with ourselves and with others. I am passionate about helping people develop new beliefs about themselves that support their values. What do you value? What are you currently doing that aligns with your values? What’s getting in the way? How do you overcome all of that? We live in a fast-paced society but counseling allows us to slow down, reflect, and figure out how to achieve our goals.

I have a history working with adults, children, couples and families. I enjoy working with a diverse population. Change is inevitable in life however how one moves through it is up to the individual. Behavior is changeable but only by the person that has the behavior not by his/her partner, parent, friend etc.

I work within a psychotherapy model that is called AEDP. AEDP is an approach to healing that starts with the premise that all symptoms are creative adaptations to painful or traumatic circumstances. We recognize the resilience underlying symptoms, as opposed to viewing symptoms as a pathological. AEDP is grounded in affective neuroscience and in psychotherapy research.

Are you stuck in an old pattern? A way of being in the world or with others that just doesn't work for you? I get it. We can get trapped in addictions (to lots of things) or other unsatisfying patterns. Old hurts, the mistaken beliefs and coping habits we get from those hurts can do that to us. We get trapped from the inside. I'd love to help you out of that trap.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
