We work with depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, eating disorders, bereavement, borderline, autism, ADHD, addiction, sexual abuse, DV, medical illnesses, relationship problems, LGTBQ+, adjustment disorders and forensic cases.
Lisa Wilkinson is a LMHC with Footprints which was started by a therapist who realized that often times the services provided to low socio-economic communities is lacking quality care. We noticed these communities were confronted with long wait times, disrespectful admins, and subpar treatment. The one and only purpose was to exploit the community for profit without providing the level of care deserved. We began from the inspiration to provide quality mental health care to the poorest of communities and treating the clients of this community the same way a rich patient would be treated in a clinic treating affluent clients.

My practice is informed by over 8 years of experience working with survivors of trauma, including families affected by police brutality, survivors of sexual assault, and refugees who have been impacted by war and terrorism.
Therapy is a brave and creative space where you can allow yourself to open up, let go, or dig in- depending on what you need. Deepen you relationship with yourself, and express parts of you that may not find expression elsewhere in life. My invitation is to show up as honestly and authentically as you can with whatever it is that you're working through. This a space free from judgment, where you are truly welcomed and encouraged to explore.

I specialize in working with Asian American adults and Children of Immigrants who struggle with unresolved trauma, sexual abuse, anxiety, and depression.
Most repeated traumas are relational traumas and therefore, it is so hard to heal without relationships. Unresolved trauma can often look like anxiety, depression, anger, relationship issues, substance use, and physical pain. These issues can be extremely distressing and isolating. I believe that change is possible for anyone and the good news is that it starts with just one question: "Could there be something better?".

I have specialized in addressing interpersonal traumas including childhood, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
The greatest discovery I have made in life is to embrace the unexpected, to crave the twists and turns as much as the great joys of life, and to lead with curiosity. Life can often feel scary, and we may face challenges that leave us feeling like there is nowhere to turn. If you find yourself feeling this way, you are not alone. Whether you are dealing with feelings of great sadness, anxiousness that feels uncontrollable, or struggling to move past an event in your life you have turned to the right place. Seeking therapy can lead to a greater understanding of yourself, the world around you, and the person you want to be.

I am experienced in working with survivors of DV/IPV and sexual abuse, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodivergent individuals, people of Indo-Caribbean and South Asian descent, and communities of colour across NYC.
My hope is to provide a gentle and affirming therapeutic space where those I work with can be their most free and authentic selves. Using a trauma-informed lens and culturally sensitive methods and modalities, I offer a safe environment in which others can feel wholly supported as they tap into their natural gifts and skills to meet their unique needs, navigate life stressors and challenges, and find healing within themselves. I am very client-led as I believe each person is the expert of their own life. The relationship we build is sacred and I honor the identities and experiences each individual bring with them into the room.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
