We all have times of suffering in our lives; it is difficult to walk through those times alone. Having gone through my own healing in counseling, and being a "wounded healer" aids me in being able to help others deal with their own suffering. I worked as a youth pastor for 16 years and in the mental health industry for the past 15 years with adolescents, children, and their families. I seek to help families that are having conflict in their home as well as those having school issues.

Don't over-think therapy. It's just not that complicated. When things get difficult, it's often hard to ask for help. We all face challenges, and we often overcome them on our own. Sometimes it takes much longer than we'd like, and that's when therapy comes into play. Why spend months or years taking on a situation or challenge by yourself, when you could work through it in far less time? Insanity is doing the same things, over and over, and expecting different results. Try something new, and break those old patterns.

Therapy is a growth experience that can influence the way you view the world and yourself. As humans, we all experience times of discomfort and life transitions. Therapy is not only for those suffering from addiction or mental illness. It is also a way to gain skills, enhance your performance, and learn more about yourself. Barriers to becoming who you want to be can be explored in therapy and work to re-building life, relationships, and even your career.

Do you find yourself struggling with life in the present… anxiety, depression, memories from the past? You want to move forward, live freely, and truly enjoy life, work, and meaningful relationships with others. You have goals you want to achieve and are tired of feeling held back. Through reflection you realize that many of these struggles are tied to the past... perhaps to childhood experiences, unhealthy relationships, trauma, or past difficult situations you went through. Perhaps you can't even quite identify the reason, you just feel a heavy emotional burden and that something is holding you back.

Every human does better when we feel connected to others and to ourselves. Put simply, connection is the compilation of three basic elements: knowing we are seen, heard, and that we matter. I was introduced to this concept when watching an interview with Maya Angelou, just before I began my graduate program to become a therapist. Since that time, I have heard many others share the same message… Oprah, Brene Brown, Johann Hari, and countless others that have studied, researched, and understand the tie that binds us all. When we feel better, we do better, right?

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
