I have worked with survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual assault for more than 10 years in a variety of in-hospital and recovery settings.
Imagine waking up every morning feeling like you can take on the world. How great does that feel? In 2017, I opened the doors of my practice to patients — offering them a wide range of counseling services to guide them through life’s challenges and most trying times. As a former special education teacher, a middle school counselor, and my experience as a clinical therapist, I bring a wide variety of experience to the space. Life can get difficult, and sometimes a little help from a Professional Therapist can make things better. I care about your well-being and will provide you all the tools you need to live your best life.

I have extensive knowledge in working with individuals who have been impacted by sexual abuse and domestic violence.
Do you find yourself overthinking? Are you a people pleaser who feels their needs are unimportant? Maybe you are having a hard time processing a traumatic event. This can be exhausting and may be impacting your current relationships, job functioning, or daily mood. I understand that sometimes it can be difficult to trust and be vulnerable with others. My goal in our work together is that you can be yourself, while feeling supported and cared for.

Have you experienced a past or current trauma? Are you feeling isolated, loss of interest in activities you once found enjoyable, anxiety, mistrust, or depressed mood? Are you participating in self destructive behaviors? If so, these are all normal symptoms of trauma, and you are in the right place. Trauma is the experience of witnessing or being involved in an event that feels life threatening. It can be anything from physical, emotional, or sexual abuse to divorce, financial setbacks, medical diagnoses or car accidents.

What keeps me growing as a professional and drives me to do what I do, are the individuals and families that I have the privilege to work with everyday. There are times in all of our lives when we need to reach out for support and encouragement and to know that we are not alone. I have extensive experience in the field of trauma, in particular with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, child abuse, and child neglect. When working with this population, I have treated issues ranging from but not limited to PTSD, depression, anxiety, attachment, and anger.

I completely agree with Steven Aitchison's quote that emotional pain is not something that should be hidden away and never spoken about. There is truth in your pain there is growth in your pain, but only if it's first brought out into the open. The first step is recognizing that there is a concern and asking for assistance. Whether you are an adult survivor of childhood sexual trauma or your child has disclosed sexual trauma, you can find healing. Maybe you are a parent who needs a safe place to discuss your experiences with pregnancy, loss, medical emergencies, etc. Or you and your partner need to process ongoing difficulties.

Ideally, I'd treat clients with a trauma history. Someone with a mixture of short and long term trauma. My ideal client is eager to learn and wants to find a way to become their own safe space. Someone who wants to learn how to set and maintain healthy boundaries, find out their triggers, and treat themselves with patience.

Feeling like your emotions have you instead of you having emotions? Always criticizing yourself? Snapping at your partner or your kids? Finding yourself people-pleasing? Can’t stop thinking about the bad things that have happened? Trying to ignore your suffering, shoving it down and bottling up the pain until you burst? Welcome. We’re here to help. “But it wasn’t that bad. It’s not trauma.” Whether or not anyone calls it trauma, pain is pain. If something happened that caused you stress or emotional harm, you may benefit from trauma therapy. No matter what happened, you deserve to heal. You deserve happiness.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
