I have particular compassion and knowledge for those with transgender and sexual orientation issues and with survivors of sexual abuse and sexual assault. I am familiar with the social stigma and trauma that can result from being a person with these issues and have helped many overcome the resulting emotional and psychological distress.

Women have a complex and multi-layered relationship to their bodies - layers of shaming and conditioning around our body image, self-worth, sexuality, pleasure, menstruation, menopause, pregnancy, ageing, motherhood, and so much more. Women also carry immense pain within their wombs related to infertility, pregnancy loss through miscarriage and abortion, sexual violation and assault, medical procedures, and through internalized misogyny- all of which have a great impact on our body, minds, and souls. Feeling safe, vital, and connected to both yourself and others is your birthright. Deeply loving your body and womanhood is possible.

Seeking therapy can be an uncomfortable experience that takes a lot of courage. Making an initial appointment is the first step of the process towards healing and becoming the best version of ourselves. Therapy allows self-reflection, support, and insight. I view my clients holistically and work collaboratively with them to have a better understanding of how they live their lives and how to achieve better functioning and life satisfaction.

Hello! When was the last time you looked into the mirror and the eyes staring back felt appreciated, seen, and heard? Most people spend years chasing after a cure for that pain - in therapy offices, churches, temples, gyms, bars, malls, and plastic surgery recovery rooms. Would you believe me if I told you there is no such cure and you certainly won’t find it in those locations, even if it existed? Would you be annoyed if I asked you to instead embrace that pain? Rather than curing it, I encourage my clients to harness its energy and make it purposeful. I am happy to report there is a method to the madness of embracing pain.

When painful thoughts and emotions arise, they can make us feel paralyzed and miserable. We think about our painful experiences and feel the same agony over and over again! We worry about the future and feel a sense of dread and fear about things that have not yet happened! We want to get rid of the pain, but if we try to eliminate painful thoughts and feelings, it's like trying to plug a high pressure leak and the water keeps finding a weak spot to burst out again! What else can we do? We can accept feelings with compassion because they show us what's most important. We can observe thoughts, then act from choice instead of fear.

Psychological trauma occurs when our level of stress exceeds our ability to cope with that stress. When this happens, our subconscious minds often develop cognitive distortions and a disregulated nervous system (stuck in fight-or-flight survival mode) that can then lead to maladaptive behaviors. This may show up as feeling anxious or depressed, ADHD, memory issues, confusion, or dissociation, feeling stuck, or lacking stability, motivation, & focus in life. I specialize in helping womxn who have been subjected to narcissistic abuse by men. This type of romantic relationship is known as a "pathological love relationship" (PLR).

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
