I work with teens and young adults going through life transitions, survivors of sexual assault/DV, individuals struggling with substance use and/or history of incarceration, people looking to learn how to cope with mental health diagnoses and symptoms, and families looking to strengthen their relationships with one another.
I know what it's like to feel backed into a corner and how helpful it can be to have that extra support. Finding a therapist can be similar to finding the right school, the right shoes, or the right couch for your new apartment; sometimes it’s a fit right away and other times it’s a process. As someone who has spent time therapist shopping myself, I emphasize the importance of working together to help people find the therapist that fits for them. I work with individuals to create the most comfortable fit in our work together, using a collaborative and holistic approach to therapy and viewing the therapeutic process as a team effort.

Among other techniques, I often use clinical hypnosis (it's nothing like what you see on TV!) for relief of many symptoms, and EMDR (a well researched therapy method proven to be one of the most effective for trauma) for survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and other stressful events.
Are you unable to enjoy life because of constant worry, racing thoughts, or waiting for the next bad thing to happen? Can you not move forward with the life you really want because you feel held hostage by past traumatic experiences? Are you mourning the loss of someone and feel buried in grief? Anxiety, trauma, and grief all have a way of making you feel stuck and burdened with stress, but becoming "unstuck" is possible. I help adults of all ages feel better about themselves and find the "you" you want to be.

I have worked with children, men, women, couples, and families in the areas of trauma, marital issues, men issues, sexual abuse, addictions, depression, anxiety, and family conflict.
Your mental health is very important. Whether you are in the midst of a crisis, feeling overwhelmed, or stuck in the same pattern of hurts, habits, and hang ups - I can help. Change is possible. You don't have to go through it alone not knowing what to do. I work with individuals and also with couples. When it comes to relationships the reality is that they take work, but sometimes we don't know what work needs to be done, or how to do it in a way that strengthens the connections between each partner. That's where I come in.

I work with survivors of sexual abuse as well as juvenile/adults with sexual acting out behaviors.
Whatever your reason for seeking counseling services, I am here and committed to helping you resolve your interpersonal issues. I often share that no one is exempt from experiencing life's problems. At some point in life, we all will face some challenges. I have learned that not everyone has proper coping skills to deal with their problems, but by speaking with a therapist, you are on the right track to identifying ways to deal with your problems. Positive change can be difficult. However, positive change is possible with persistence, commitment, and hard work.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
