It is my calling to help encourage people to value their personal stories. This is done by recognizing their strengths and using them for healing, recovery, finding balance, and discovering their worth. Prior to becoming a therapist, I managed a program serving severely mentally ill, homeless adults. I was privileged to support this routinely under-served population here in San Diego, giving me a renewed perspective on the value and worth of every human life.

For 20 years, I've worked with adults who have experienced anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, and low self-worth. My clients tell me that I have a calming presence, and that I'm easy to talk to. There is always a different way to look at things, and I offer a hopeful, positive, and realistic outlook. I work together with my clients to create a space for further self-exploration, self-love, and healing. I believe that we want to be loved, accepted, respected, feel listened to and understood. I am non-judgmental and accepting when someone feels safe enough to share their story or experiences with me.

I strive to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their resilience and inner strengths through my counseling services. I achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan. I provide a nurturing space while also providing “carefrontation,” a compassionate way to challenge negative beliefs that hinder your growth.

As a therapist, I believe in healing as a community and maintain an anti-oppressive and social justice framework in my work. I have experience working with Black, Indigenous, Women of Color (BIPOC), and other historically marginalized communities to address depression, anxiety, and trauma-related concerns. We all deserve to be heard, and valued and live a fulfilling life. Yet, somewhere in history, in society, in our families, and within ourselves a different narrative may have been created — a narrative that’s prevented us from recognizing our worth.

I don't take for granted the strength and vulnerability it takes to enter into therapy; and as a clinician, my goal is to meet you where you are and help to create an environment that allows for both authentic exploration and fostering trust that there is an opportunity for healing and growth. In working together, I hope that my calm, curious, and intentional communication style helps you to feel heard, understood, and supported throughout our time together.

Therapy is a journey of self-introspection, leaning into difficult matters and coming out better as a result. I will be your guide as you walk this path of looking inward to change or let go of those things that don't serve you. It's an uncovering of the good that is within and implementing strategies to maintain a life full of joy, contentment, and peace. I will help you uncover your values (what is important to you) and assist in taking committed action towards those values with skills such as mindfulness, opposite action, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

If you are someone who has an aversion to dredging up slings and arrows, I can relate. My clinical experience specifically includes working with the families of individuals with a severe mental illness diagnosis, bereavement counseling (including situations of violent or traumatic loss), and infertility. I also work with individuals who are anticipating or experiencing stress related to high-conflict divorce.

My clients often start from a place of anxiety, sadness, feeling overwhelmed with the demands of daily life. Through our work, they learn to manage their emotions, find resources within themselves to sort out issues and move through their lives with new skills. We clear traumas from childhood and adulthood, leaving them feeling lighter, happier. I integrate the perspective of resiliency and take a strength-based approach to inspire change. It is not so much what happens in life as how we respond to life events that shapes our future. Through our work together, you can experience an improved quality of life.

I believe that therapy should be accessible to all. I aim to provide a safe, empathic, and comfortable environment that allows an individual to address their mental health needs at their own pace. I have worked in acute medical settings, homeless services, community mental health, higher education, and HIV+ case management. I am a firm advocate for expanding access and enhancing therapeutic experiences for queer, Latinx, and BIPOC individuals. As an LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapist, I support clients of any gender identity or expression.

When people are challenged with changes that affect the ability to manage stressors, there comes a time for positive change and support. I am passionate about focusing on the healing process, whether it involves the challenges of exploring maladaptive behaviors or the triggers of trauma. I help my clients, who include children, adults, and families to find healthy coping mechanisms and self-autonomy which will lead to positive perceptions. This, in turn, creates personal identification and self-worth, thus creating healthy relationships.

Are you concerned about your child after having experienced something traumatic? Domestic violence, accidents, assault, child physical abuse, child sexual abuse, neglect, and other traumatic events take time and support to heal from. Many children are left with depression, anxiety, PTSD, defiance, opposition, and many other issues after the trauma.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
